PCMO vs HDEO detergents

I may be reaching that point where I am becoming educated beyond my intelligence. A diesel oil will have an overbased detergent package because of the various acids that can result as a by-product of...

    Oil Warranties

I was in a SHOP to get some new tires today. The manager called me back to his desk to fill out some warranty information. He left me there by myself for a while, and I saw something I thought was interesting. <img src="/forums/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="wink" title="wink" height="15" width="15"...

    Help identify Unknown Grease

I bought this stuff at a garage, I mean a real garage, sale. I don't know what it is and no one could tell me what it was used for. It comes in a small plastic jar, sort of like a small wax container, about 2 ounces. It is brown, very thick, extremely, I mean extremely tacky, no odor. I did...

    WIX/NAPA?

Is a WIX 51036 and a NAPA gold 1036 the absolute exact same filter in every specification and detail? My source for WIX filters just retired and sold the business and the new owners don't carry WIX.

    Valvoline Rebate

Valvoline now has another rebate program going. You must buy a 12 quart case, or 3 jugs, of one gallon or more. For the conventional, it is $10.00. For the Durablend and MaxLife Blend it is $15.00. For the Synpower and MaxLife synthetic it is $20.00. For folk that like MaxLife, that comes...

    Valvoline Price Increase

I was at Wal Mart earlier and noticed they were setting up two ends and an island display for Valvoline. Their Premium Conventional was $14.00, the Maxlife Blend was $15.50, and the Synpower was $22.50. They are now more expensive than Mobil 1, the only other synthetic they carry on a regular basis.

SYNTHETIC BLEND QUESTION, OR THOUGHTS, OR...

I am not sure I have any logical thought process here, but, I was thinking about synthetic blend motor oils. I think for their two blends, Durablend and MaxLife blend, Valvoline advertises 70% GP II and 30% GP III. That kind of makes sense as GP II and GP III are closely related. But I am...

    API SM/SL/CF, ACEA A3/B3/B4, C3

This oil has the title certifications. I believe CF is for high speed diesel engines(passenger cars) but what would be the add to give it the CF rate? I do know that it has a SA of only 0.78 and a TBN of 7. This is a Valvoline 5W-30 and it looks almost identical to their MaxLife full synthetic...

    V6 Engine Question

Please un-confuse me. If you have a 90 deg V6, you either have to have offset crank pins or balance shaft/shafts. If you have a 60 deg V6, you don't need either and can use common crank...

What in the world is "polydimethylsiloxane?"

I know that it is a degrease, spray on engine cleaner, supposedly completely non toxic, but what exactly is it? It worked great on my BBQ grill and great on my fire ring.

    Olefin Copolymers

I hope I am in the correct forum. If you had a VOA done by a lab with the equipment to show such, what do olefin copolymers show you? If brand A has X amount of olefin copolymers and brand B has .64X olefin copolymeres, does that possibly mean that brand B has fewer VII?

    New Base Stock

    Another Mono Grade Oil Question!

If, according to SAE, an oil advertised as mono grade is not allowed to have any viscosity index improvers, and if you find an oil advertised as a conventional/not synthetic, and if it has a VI of 126, and a GP II+ has a max VI of 120, does that likely mean it is a GP II/GP III blend?

    Noack Question

Looking at Brand X oil, I see they have a line of synthetic blend oils in 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W-40, 15W-40 and 20W-50 in one of their lines. If I look at the NOACK for each oil, in order, it is 13, 13.5, 10, 13, 9, and 8. Can I infer anything about the base oils from the Noack? It appears...

    Diesel Oil TBN Queston

I have noticed that the TBN of the newer diesel oils is often around 8 where it used to be 10-12. I am guessing the calcium has been lowered to reduce SA in the newer oils(CJ-4) If this is correct, what add is used for the more stringent soot control/anti sludge?
