How do you prepare your auto for a road trip?

I haven't travelled more than 200 miles from home since I retired 2 years ago...would really like to head south for a bit this winter...these long, cold northern Michigan Winters are getting older than me.

Not trolling, but all things being equal, why not just use SuperTech for everything?

For some reason, I have just gone from a complete oil nerd to the guy who now puts ST 5w30 High Mileage full synthetic with a Fram Tough Guard filter in my 2 older vehicles. This from the guy that drove all over metro Detroit to "score" discounted German Castrol "green" when they discontinued...

    Good brand of ready-struts?

Ok...it's early and I hit the post button before I was done. The KYB' s on the Camry were the clear ticket on the old girl and have restored the ride...quiet and supple...if anything better than OEM (trying to remember how it rode before). Despite my concern about ride harshness, these units...

    Good brand of ready-struts?

I know it's been awhile but I wanted to post an "update" to the ready strut saga on the old Camry. In the end we installed a set of Monroe ready struts. The result was awful. Clunking and popping right out of the box...not much improvement from the Gabriel's. I determined that they might...

    Store brand rear drums/shoes?

Thanks, guys...I was correct in my assumption that the store brands are junk (you'd think they would have insisted on some degree of quality on the units by now but are apparently happy with selling them despite the poor quality). The Power stop units sound like a good compromise from RockAuto...

    Store brand rear drums/shoes?

I just picked up a 2009 Toyota Yaris 5 speed and got a look at the brakes. The fronts appear almost new but the rears are shot...they need to be changed out now. I was just considering getting store brand drums and shoes and have no idea which . are better/worse. Pricing is comparable ( and...

    Good brand of ready-struts?

Unfortunately, the original struts are gone so there's no way to rebuild them. I am pretty much limited to ready struts at this point. I'm leaning toward the KYB but am concerned about harshness. The set of inserts I used on a minivan were so stiff and rough riding I took them off. Maybe...

    Good brand of ready-struts?

I had a set of Sachs on the old Villager and my old Honda Accord...they were awesome...best ride/handling compromise...just wish they made a ready strut. I'm not sure I want to buy a bunch of diverse components (although it may be the best result as Trav said) and build them out. My only...

    Good brand of ready-struts?

The spring on the driver side of my nephew's 2003 Camry was found to be broken awhile back. In hindsight, we should have just replaced the spring but since the car had almost 90k miles at the time we decided to replace them and installed a set of Gabriel Ultra ready-struts. Since installing...

Switching CVT fluid from Nissan OEM to other brand?

I have performed 2 changes on the CVT in my Kizashi...one at just over 60k (did 2 indrain and fills with a few days of driving in between) and the second one at 95k miles (only 1drain and fill but also replaced the small in-line filter and utilized a 10 oz. bottle of Lubegard CVT additive to the...

Oil filter has only 2k miles but 2 years on it. Can I leave it on for next oil change?

Big rust area here in northern Michigan...it would appear that they are applying road salt during the winter in a 2 to 1 ratio (2 inches of salt for every inch of snow). In true BITOG OCD fashion I'm going to change out the oil AND filter next week...not sure what to obsess about after that but...

Oil filter has only 2k miles but 2 years on it. Can I leave it on for next oil change?

I am also getting ready to change the oil on my vehicle (2010 Suzuki Kizashi) that has less than 2,000 miles in the last year (just sold our 2nd car so the Suzuki is now our only vehicle and will see a few more miles but not much more since I retired last year...don't drive it much and it has...

    cars with high mileage

My sister just retired my '99 Villager with 217k...she drove it for 5 years (had 126 k when she got it). Engine and trans were still great but it needed suspension work and was rusting...not worth it. I kept it in pristine condition when I owned it...after 5 years of her abuse I called it the...

2k miles on oil in 1 year...go longer?

I was thinking about just changing the oil and leaving the filter in (filters on this are a bear to get out...always a mess...,). As far as the car, it's the best vehicle I've ever owned...bought it new and now 102k on it (AWD CVT). The only repairs were a small transfer case seal leak early...

2k miles on oil in 1 year...go longer?

I've only put 2,000 miles on the Kizashi in the last year (also had a Prius which I used for work and most running around before I retired and sold it...now using the Suzuki exclusively but obviously not driving much). The current fill is PP high mileage with a M1 filter. I was considering...

    Add lubegard to Redline D4?

OK...I'll give on the Lubegard...probably doesn't need it. As far as the other "Honda spec" fluids, they are no more "spec" than the D4...especially the omission by all of them of the rather unique use of significant zinc in the Honda stuff (I believe that also applies to the disparate...

    Add lubegard to Redline D4?

I don't argue that the DW-1 is a unique fluid...but question whether it provides superior protection or performance over the D4. If I did I'd simply use the DW-1 (which is cheaper). On the contrary, the high incidence of problems and outright failure among these Honda transmissions (especially...

    Valve adjustment?

I just had a valve adjustment done on my 2008 Element with the 2.4 L at 87,000 miles (done by the dealership). They claim they had to make several adjustments but "they'd seen worse" (not sure whether that was good or bad). I went ahead with it because of all the recommendations to do it...

    Add lubegard to Redline D4?

HI all...I just completed the second of three drain and fills on my 2008 Honda Element with Redline D4. The vehicle has 87,000 miles and has only had 1 single drain and fill by the original owner at 60,000 miles (Honda DW-1...at the dealership). The vehicle shifts OK but I notice a delay in...

    Honda DW-1 VOA

I thought that DW-1 was a thin fluid as a previous UOA I saw on this site indicated a used viscosity of 5.7 or so. This VOA has a fairly high viscosity aft 7.5. If that is the case does the DW-1 shear in use like the older Z-1? I thought that DW-1 was supposed to be more shear stable?
