this is what I sent HPL (which is essentially my original post)
I just purchased my dream car 2025 Honda Civic Type R (FL5 K20C1)
I want to keep it "forever" i.e. maximize the probability that the engine and the turbo will last for a long long time.
I have no intention of tracking or racing...
No, I am giving Oil temp (from the oil temp gauge). oil temps as shown on the gauge are indeed different from the water temp gauge
However, Honda does not use an oil temp sensor, and therefore the ECU estimates the Oil temp gauge display based on a model that factors in engine coolant...
I have not had a chance recently.
the last two drives, normal speeds on freeway and rural highway, the highest I observed was 195
I understand that the oil temp is "calculated" from the water temp... so I am not sure how accurate it might be
based on recommendations above, I did more research, specifically into 40 weight oils.
my resistance to 40 weight is breaking down.
same for my bias against Mobil 1
for now, subject to change without notice, my top contender is Mobil 1 FS 0W-40
This product has the following approvals...
Thanks,
but... it seems that A40 certification is for 40 or 50 weight oils, as I could not find a xW30 with A40 certification.
I rather not go heavier than 30 weight for warranty concerns.
though I have not found any evidence for Honda denying warranty due to heavier oil...
I did a quick search, and I am now thoroughly confused, which means that I probably misunderstood you...
it seems that these certifications conflict with each other, VW504 is low SAPS while Porsche A40 is high SAPS
i.e. if I understood correctly, no oil will pass or have both certifications...
Thanks,
My concerns were mostly because I don't really know anything...
I am trying to educate myself by reading and watching videos.
The "oil pump" and "turbo cooling" are things that I picked up from these, and since I still don't know much, my general approach is going be "better safe...
K20Z3 is a different engine, red line at 8300 RPM and was designed to consume oil at high RPM. Honda says that 1L per 1000 KM is normal for the K20Z3
I was trying the Rotella T6 5w40 to see if it would make a difference. it did.
the K20C1 is turbocharged, I never had a car with a turbocharger...
Sorry I was not clear, I wrote "going over 30", so when I wrote "a thick oil" and "heavy oil" later on when I was talking about the oil pump, I was thinking about SAE 40, not 5w30.
I know that the oil pumps are the same, but even outside of the US the recommended oil is 0w20, with 0w30 and...
Thank you!
I am not sure why, but I have a bias against Mobil 1...
It might be because long long time ago, when I researched oils for my 2007 Civic Si FA5 K20Z3 I read some "bad" stuff about Mobil 1, though formulas have changed since, and I should indeed give it another look.
EDIT: I just...
My main concern about going over 30 is that not cold starts, but rather how a thick oil might affect the oil pump life, since it was not designed for such heavy oil
Also, seems to me that a lower viscosity oil will cool the turbo better, and keep engine cooler in general.
I've been wondering the same...
The first oil change today was Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w20 and a Fram XG7317, the older version with metal inside which I had leftover from my previous 07 FA5 Si
I also installed the Valvo-Max drain bolt.
The reason for the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W20 is that...
