That's fair. I just wonder if they design it to last enough outside warranty or for someone like me who will keep the car for many years.
I get your point tho.
I have been using Castrol edge 5w30 in my 1998 Camry with 170,000km.
I mainly drive it around town so it does mostly short trips, but once every week or two I'll take it out for a highway run for a bit.
It's leaking a little oil when it's parked. Conditions in my area are -11c winter to 45c in...
Oh I see that one is at my local store too.
Something I don't understand tho and I'm genuinely trying to learn.
If you're saying just look for 229.5 that's all that matters? I find that a bit confusing because the edge 5w30, the one you listed, and the penrite 5w40 all have 229.5 so how do...
So I am a bit confused. So irrelevant of 5w30/5w40 im just looking for one that has MB 229.5?

Thats the one I am looking to get. It has a 3.8 HTHS...
Thanks for that I'll leave you guys alone now and stop bothering you with silly questions.
You just run it year round ? For reference where I live it gets to minus 5c and as high as 45c in summer.
No I believe real people which is why I made my account.
Thanks for that.
I thought 5w40 might be good for a sti for heat protection because aside from the ambient temps, the entire engine bay gets extremely hot. I thought it might help other parts out.
Funny you say that. The Camry leaks a...
Thanks very much.
Actually surprised I can get them. Looks like the 40 is cheaper.

Thanks for the help everyone.
So what are basically the trade offs then ? If I stay with 5w30 I'm risking engine damage if I drive in the summer heat which gets over 40c some days here? I don't do much round town driving it's mainly uphill Highway speed driving.
But are there trade offs for...
Thanks for the replies.
The only thing that got me looking into it is I use 5w30 edge. When I put my rego into their oil picker it would always say edge 5w40 best choice then good choice 5w30.
So overall 5w40 is indeed the best choice ?
I live in Australia, have a 2018 Sti. I am highly considering going up to 5w40, and have tried doing a fair bit of research. Most videos or posts I try to look up, the people have sold the car.
I want to keep the car long term, so I would love to know about oil for people who keep cars for a...
