Old Nissan 140 OB - Oil Question

I'd say if it's a TLDI motor, yeah. The synthetics are good enough that Evinrude had a programmable setting to use less oil on XD100. If you plan to keep it and the price doesn't put you off.... If it's not a TLDI I'd stick with TC-W3. Not sure about the Amsoil but I just looked at a jug of...

Old Nissan 140 OB - Oil Question

Is it one of the carbureted 2 strokes or is it TLDI direct injection? If the former, any TC-W3. If the latter, DFI oil only. I use either Tohatsu complete advantage or BRP XD-100 in my TLDI. I'm pretty sure they are the same oil. The amsoil injector oil is supposed to be a direct replacement for...

    Time for springizing the boat

Nice... I moved from NC to CA and the trailer regs here are so much nicer. Buy a trailer, get your tag once, that's it. "Permanent trailer" they call it. I didn't even put my plate on the trailer for the first 5 years I owned it. Just kept in in the truck, in case. Never been asked about it.

Transition to a Larger Boat, Courses

No advice really; i'm only a trailer boat guy, but kudos for realizing you don't know what you don't know and wanting to learn rather than just go out there and wing it. edit: no pun intended.

To change or not to change?

Same vehicle here, except 2018. Also severe service by the definition. Many short trips (no commute anymore) and some off-roading and towing. I would (and I do) do 5k which IIRC is the factory recommended OCI.

When is enough, enough? Never, apparently. Mercury marine boasts it's new 7.6L V12 outboard.

And when it's water that you have to displace, you need a big motor to do it quickly.

    2 stroke oil cross use

Yep, this. Even if it doesn't damage the engine the cooler temps of a water cooled outboard motor could lead to the oil not combusting completely and fouling your plugs and your local waterways. Use TC-W3 oil; any will do. If you're price conscious, I like Supertech. If you want the absolute...

Star Brite Synthetic Blend 2-Stroke outboard oil

I doubt there's too many formulations of semi-syn TC-W3 left on the market. What color is it? It's probably on par with (if not identical to) one or more of Yamalube 2M, Mercury Optimax oil, Evinrude XD-50, Pennzoil Premium Plus. I bet if you can figure out who makes DFI oil for West Marine...

    Password manager

Keepass user for years now. Cross platform; I use it on Windows, Linux, and MacOS as well as on iPad and Android. It's not all the same application but it's the same database. I use KeepassXC on Windows and Linux these days but you have a few choices of client.

    Water in differential

This would be the perfect test for the old argument about whether marine gear lube is really worth the extra bucks. Might need some limited slip modifier for a truck.

The ATF "lifetime fluid" lie continues

Yep. When I got my truck (2018 Frontier 4x4) I was surprised that the maintenance schedule didn't seem to call for transmission fluid changes. Then I read the "severe" schedule which says to change it every 20k miles. That's a huge gulf, and in reality most people fall somewhere in between...

What products are you not switching from?

Yes. XtraTuf muck boots used to be USA made and then they switched production to China and the quality fell off. Not a knock on China but more a knock on the bean counters who screwed it up.

    Are you noticing your aging

With even a moderately decent diet supplements aren't necessary... there's no way humans would have survived to invent vitamin pills otherwise. There are exceptions of course when someone has a true vitamin deficiency but generally then the docs prescribe IV vitamins. Source: Am a 45 year old...

What products are you not switching from?

Lotrimin AF liquid spray. The bottoms of my feet used to look like the surface of the moon. Been using this stuff for 20 years and as long as they keep making it i'll keep using it.

Boat trailer - roller or bunk

One disadvantage of carpet covered bunks in salt water is that the carpet gets soaked and then (unless you have a lake on the way home from the salt to dunk the trailer in) leaches that salt out over the hardware, even if you otherwise rinse the trailer and boat with a hose.. My galvanized...
