With the 4 cyl in that mazda you'd have no problem telling if there was a miss. It's a little harder in a 6, and sometimes really difficult to tell in a v8, but in an L4, you're losing 50% of your pulses/revolution. You'd hear the car cough and sputter, and the whole car would shake.
