Most likely, those vehicles were made in Mexico or Brazil whereas the Audis are German in origin. That could certainly have something to do with it. What specific JD Power survey are you referring to?

Not biased at all are we? I can't (and don't want to) speak for the Mexican- and Brazilian-made VWs, but aside from failed coilpacks (a known supplier issue) I have had 0 issues with this car in 36k miles.
