A good practical, easy check. Put a socket wih pull bar onto the crankshaft/pully bolt. Try turning the engine forward, then backward. Fairly heavy resistance will be felt when the valve system starts to turn, either direction. From this "feel", you can get an idea as to how much slack there is...
