Valve stem seals, Ford 4.6L engine

Someone please tell me when Ford changed Valve stem seals so that oil consumption isn't excessive after 70K miles +/-. I'm reasonably sure that they did, but don't know when. I like the product and wan't another, but without the oil problem. I have conflicting info. one is that it was in 1996...

    Timing chain replacment?

A good practical, easy check. Put a socket wih pull bar onto the crankshaft/pully bolt. Try turning the engine forward, then backward. Fairly heavy resistance will be felt when the valve system starts to turn, either direction. From this "feel", you can get an idea as to how much slack there is...

    Locked in place piston rings

I do a lot of mechanical work, for a DIY'er. In the last two engines that I've been into the oil scraper rings were locked in place by carbonized oil (one Dodge 3.9 liter six cylinder, and one 3 liter Mitsubishi, both more than ten years old, and both with near 200K miles). Wear was not bad in...

Excessive oil consumption, Foird 4.6L engine

Thanks a bunch guys, particularly Overlord, Johnicon, and Ulver. You have confirmed what I thought I knew already. Re. PCV valve/Blazer, yes the PCV valve has been changed, more than once. Now I have to decide whether to do it or not. To answer a couple of other points; Im in Texas, temps...

Excessive oil consumption, Foird 4.6L engine

I have a 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis, engine has about 98000 miles, runs great, gasoline mileage normal, normal in every way, except oil mileage. If I use 10w-30, as recommended, mileage is about 1000 miles per quart, about 1200+/- miles with 15w-40. Ford says that this level of oil consumption...
