Does Where Oil Filters are Made Matter?

Short version, you're not buying a country of origin, you're buying a name brand, or lack of same. Having worked for several global Fortune 1000 aerospace firms, I can assure you that a filter made by a Fortune 1000 firm in their overseas plant will meet the same engineering and quality...

    Oil Filter Media Efficiency Spec's

PART 1 OF 3 OIL FILTER MEDIA EFFICIENCY SPECIFICATIONS I had time on my hands last week, so I compiled a list of oil filter media filtration specs pilfered from the InterTubes. I opted to not take the time to spreadsheet the data. A few notes… 1. CURRENT AND HISTORIC SPECS The specs below...

Project farm testing a 70 yr old oil

True dat on the eventual API opportunity to standardize. Much needed then! But it seems that for a LONG time -- a decade at the least -- they opted for "acid trip" instead.

Project farm testing a 70 yr old oil

The skinny from that 1969 Popular Mechanics article: Post WWII in the late 1940s the three industry oil ratings were "Regular, Premium, and Heavy Duty." Beginning in the early 1950s the "M" system was introduced, still in effect in 1969. MS - MOTOR SEVERE SERVICE The default oil choice since...

Project farm testing a 70 yr old oil

As I suspected it might, my use of parentheses there (MM, MS or ML) was a bit confusing. In theory -- just speculation -- the lid may have included anywhere from zero to all three of the M's..? I didn't readily find an API "SC" era green lid Quaker State can to compare to, so I used info from...

Project farm testing a 70 yr old oil

More trivia... In the video it is suggested there's no API service rating or viscosity listed on the can, understandable since the top lid is rusted and unreadable. But the info is (or was) there, as is the case with all of the hundreds of vintage oil cans I've encountered along Route 66. There...

Project farm testing a 70 yr old oil

FYI, I came across an April 1954 Quaker State ad in Popular Mechanics that states, "Specifically designed for today's modern motors." So if you can find it on EBay, you should feel free to use that vintage Quaker State in your 2020 Corvette Z51. That's probably as modern as it gets.

Project farm testing a 70 yr old oil

I'll wander off the reservation here and dive into this oil's history rather than its performance. 'Cause that's how I roll after four Sierra Nevada pale ales. I spend a lot of time delving into Americana and vintage items, Route 66 visits and history, etc, and will immodestly claim I've gotten...

STP MMT as a substitute for brand name gasoline?

Short version: I'd suggest that adding a retail bottle o' juice to a tank of generic gas won't make up for using a non-name-brand gasoline (not that all generic gas is of poor quality), but if you're mainly concerned about detergency, etc., I guess this couldn't hurt. Personally I'd never use...

    Kerosine in a gas engine?

Adding relatively "large" (I'll decline to define that) amounts of kerosene to motor oil for short periods to clean out engines is old-school and not crazy at all. I'm not saying "Do it" or "Don't do it," but just that it's something that's been done to a gazillion engines over the decades...
