Lake Speed talks about recent changes in oil chemistry

I'm seeing now that Oil Analyzers sells the test kit via Amsoil's website (same company?). I'm starting to solidify on a switch here.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum no longer GTL base?

I'm not familiar at all with dexos (never been a GM guy), but that makes me wonder if dexos being there has something to do with "made with natural gas" being missing from the spec sheet? What about losing GTL was necessary to maintain dexos...other than the cost of certification? Of course, I'm...

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum no longer GTL base?

This is one context where I don’t like a mystery. And Shell’s reply to my email was just a canned pointing at the specs that we’re all scratching our heads at.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum no longer GTL base?

Fair point. I'd be tempted to go outside of Blackstone to send a VOA, but I might just spend the money on Amsoil SS. :P

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum no longer GTL base?

That spec sheet also still says "made with natural gas" unlike the 0w40 sheet, so there has to be some GTL in the 5w30 unless there's an error.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum no longer GTL base?

I'm a noob, so my replies are delayed so that a mod can review. But to answer directly, it looks the same in 0w20, but 0w40 no longer has the "made with natural gas" line. I'm having trouble pulling up old 0w40 sheets from archive dot org to cross check, though.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum no longer GTL base?

It also says "made with natural gas" at the top banner for most viscosities (not 0w40). So it would appear there is some GTL there, but it's hard to say how much for sure imho. The two spec sheets I have saved show the same stats with the latter having updated specifications as if the same oil...

Lake Speed talks about recent changes in oil chemistry

The technical data sheets for Pennzoil Ultra Platinum grades other than 0w-40 still say "made with natural gas," but the SDS seems to leave the door open for base oil changes. I just had Blackstone do used oil analysis on my last two changes with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w-20. I'm presently...
