What are you listening to right now?

Tomorrow is ANZAC day in Australia and New Zealand, so I'm listening to "And the band played Waltzing Matilda" by Eric Bogle. My favourite version is from the Irish band The Pogues.

Flavors of the year from BITOG past..

When I joined Shell / Pennzoil PurePlus GTL (gas to liquid) was all the rage. High purity and low volatility. Some of the Pennzoil Platinum products listed very low Noack numbers on their product data sheets. Then formulas changed and Noack volatility was no longer listed by Pennzoil. Then...

    Ferrari Testarossa 1988 coolant

I consider G-05 to be the modern coolant for anything older, and many things newer. It’s a hybrid coolant (HOAT) that contains organic acids (OAT) for long life, but not 2-EHA. But it also has some silicates like old-school IAT, but at a lower concentration so that it doesn’t cause any problems.

Asked Pennzoil about an oil for a classic car.

According to the data on the Shell website, the oil has a KV100 of 15 cSt and a TBN of 10.1 With zinc (ZDDP) at 1200 ppm, that makes it a strong oil. Shell says it meets API CK-4 and SN. Ref: https://www.shell-livedocs.com/data/published/en/5e129bc2-8941-43f1-81c8-0c6345b45e33.pdf

Redline 0w40, 5w40 and 10w40: What is the difference?

I always go for high HTHS and low Noack. Given the figures above, that says 5W40 or 10W40. Given that both offer sufficient cold weather starting, I then look for the lowest KV100 viscosity for the highest HTHS. This points to the lowest VII polymer load. Which is the 10W40 in this case...

What synthetic oils were available in 1982?

I think the original Mobil 1 over here was 15W50, or at least the first one I recall being advertised.

Havoline ProDS, Havoline ProDS Lifelong, and Havoline ProDS Euro

That sounds like a good plan to me. If possible I like to crack fresh oil containers for an oil change.

Talking with the boys about Havoline ProDS Lifelong

It's a great oil, and you will be fine, old or new vehicle. When it comes to seal conditioners, API constricts you from above and below, so there is only so much wiggle room. It's a non issue.

Switching to high saps oil after DPF delete

Low SAPS (Sulphated Ash %) is to protect the exhaust emissions control systems. So yes, if they don’t exist, you can then run high SAPS Euro oil like A3/B4. It should have more TBN for longer oil life and higher ZDDP (zinc) for less engine wear.

Understood, thanks. The Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 was definitely worth a try.

Valvoline Restore and Protect now in 0W-16

Any improvement? This is my first OCI with the Valvoline Restore and Protect 10W-40 in my GM Cruze 1.8L. So far, no improvement for me, but early days, I’m only ~ 2.5k miles into my first run of Valvoline Restore and Protect. Consumption is pretty standard at roughly a bit under a quart.
