1976 VW Bus / Kombi - oil recommendation

Does it feel any smoother with the RP Synerlec ? With Penrite 10-Tenths and Royal Purple HPS, you are certainly running some high end oils.

1976 VW Bus / Kombi - oil recommendation

High Performance Street (HPS) is what I would use if using Royal Purple products. It's got high ZDDP (zinc, anti-wear) at somewhere over 1000 ppm according to their charts, high TBN at 9.7, and their special Synerlec friction modifier. Last I looked, they don't add Synerlec or this much ZDDP...

Liqui Moly MolyGen VS Pennzoil Platinum for Nissan Qashqai - American In Ecuador

Welcome! Without a doubt, get the Pennzoil Platinum, it's a great oil. The LiquiMoly is fine, but not at double the price. The green is fun, but just a gimmick, and it quickly goes black like all other oil in use.

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

They also say a higher viscosity oil is better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speed or under extreme load conditions. It says so in the manual.

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

No Toyota recommends 0W16 or 0W20 or 5W20 or 5W30 or 10W30 or 15W40 as printed in the factory manual

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

Toyota as a company spec everything from 0W16 to 15W40 in the same engine. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/2018-camry-hybrid-manual.297507/

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

For the 3.5 Litre 2GR-FKS V6 Engine, in Australia you are allowed to run 0W20 or 5W30.

1976 VW Bus / Kombi - oil recommendation

Beckstar: I read somewhere that “racing” oils generally don’t have enough detergents for a daily drive, but I read later that many of the “racing” oils in chain stores do have enough detergents Beckstar: Sorry, what do you mean by “a strong detergent TBN of 9.8…”? SR5: Overbase detergents are...

    Shell Helix Ultra 5W-30 SP DEXOS1 GEN-3

Thanks very much for sharing. Nice Moly (58 ppm), Zinc (845 ppm) is right at the top of what you can expect from a modern SP / GF-6 oil, while viscosity (KV100 = 9.73 cSt) is right at the lower end of the 30 grade viscosity scale (9.3 to 12.5 cSt). This is what I would run if my car spec'd 0W20.

1976 VW Bus / Kombi - oil recommendation

The only Valvoline VR1 we get in Australia is a 10W40 semi-synthetic that is API SJ. Given API SJ was introduced in 2001, and it's a '76 VW Kombi, it would be better than the original fill of API SD (1971). Followed by some API SE starting in 1979.

Have you ever considered putting a cover over the oil cooler during winter, and removing it over summer when the extra cooling is required? I hear that was a common practice in the past.
