Thanks. I wasn’t really trying to debate extended OCIs directly. I am trying to understand if the wear rate accelerates the more miles you run on an oil because it builds with <15 micron particles not filtered out.
Please help me understand. I’ve heard multiple times that a lot wear is from <15 micron particle size, which is mostly not caught by oil filters. Yet it seems like many people are confident in going extended oil change intervals just knowing the oil stays in grade and fuel dilution.
Does the...
So I’ve been researching Subaru WRX MT options, and get a little overwhelmed with things like yellow metal risks for GL-5 in MTs. I don’t care about fuel economy or cost much. I do care about wear and good shift quality in all climates.
I and am debating between:
1. Just paying a service...
Thanks! It looks like Amsoil actually makes a 75W-85 grade too, which is a little closer. Which would you recommend? I don’t care about fuel efficiency, I just don’t want to change shift quality feel.
Motor Oil Geek is recommending transmission and diff changes at first 5,000 miles.
How much does this community buy-in to the need for this?
(I was aiming to change these at my manual’s severe service recommended of 15,000 miles, but now wondering if I should sooner).
My 23’ WRX manual says to use Subaru Extra MT but 75W-90 is ok, but “4: You may use this type of manual transmission oil. However, using this type of oil will detract from driveability and fuel efficiency.”
Does a good 90 weight such as Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 make the shifting feel worse?
Thanks. I am new to posting and will keep reading. I am also a big fan of Valvoline Restore and Protect and use it exclusively in my older cars.
I would be interested in what you think would be the drawback to switching to Mobil 1 ESP after using Valvoline Restore and Protect for enough...
With all the technical discussions in BITOG on all the attributes of motor oil, I thought there would be more love for other choices with just periodic use of Valvoline Restore and Protect.
As a hypothetical example, wouldn’t running Mobil 1 ESP or HPL 0W-30 for every ~75k miles, and then two...
Seems like it’s pretty high consensus that even well maintained engines could benefit from Valvoline Restore and Protect at some point to clean the piston rings. I understand Valvoline advertises “factory clean” from 4 or more OCIs. I also understand it’s getting good UOAs and some choose to...
To be clear, I understand a 30 (or 40] weight oil is better, and plan to switch when my warranty expires. I have also appreciated the thoughts challenging me if I really should be concerned while in warranty. I may change my mind and switch earlier to Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30.
To be honest, I’m...
Do you think this is true, even when you stick to the exact same oil brand, type, and grade? Or is this more from switching oils that have different add packs?
It does say this, and I agree it feels like Subaru opened the door. But it still doesn’t overrule the other statements. While I’m convinced a 30 weight would be better, and the engineers in Subaru know this, I expect the dealer would still try to argue I violated the manual when they are...
