What criteria do you use when selecting a motor oil?

At least you were smart enough to talk to an Exxon Mobil employee. When I was last at Advance, one patron was asking oil questions to one of the teenage employees who absolutely reeked of weed. When the teen went to the back to retrieve something (or go take another drag) I quietly mentioned to...

Why is it NOT OK for 0w40 in GM 5.3 engine?

That is because the problem with the engine likely has little or nothing to do with viscosity, it’s just a manufacturing defect that occurs in these trucks at an elevated rate. Not that the 40 is going to hurt anything, not revisiting that, it’s just that the oil cannot”fix” the defect.

Why is it NOT OK for 0w40 in GM 5.3 engine?

whomever told you about the passages and what not - it is inaccurate. That being said, I don’t know the precise failure mechanisms of this engine but if the underlying issues are metallurgical, oil will not really address the issue. By analog, there were issues with lifters on hemi engines up...

Rental review: Polaris Slingshot 2021 automatic

I would rather have a Miata or that little Fiat they were selling up until a year or so ago.

    84 month car loans

I will defend these notes to some degree by noting that given the cost of things today, if you pair the note with a reasonable factory extended warranty, the car is not too costly relative to income and assets, and the rate is not obscene (discount it by at least three percent for inflation amd...

    84 month car loans

You will never be poor following this approach, but the reality is that once you are within certain tax brackets, and if you have a business and the car legitimately qualifies in whole or part as a business expense, and once you factor in depreciation, and assuming the rate is attractive (2...

Engine blew up in the shop.

It is a business decision as much as a liability decision.

What criteria do you use when selecting a motor oil?

From your handle you are better informed than I am but I would think the viscosity delta between a 30 and a 20 would not be the issue but rather the low tension rings?

What criteria do you use when selecting a motor oil?

That is high for no load. Do you have an oil cooler? I fat fingered the other post and it was easier to delete but highest I have seen is 230, just touching it, with 8k in tow on hilly terrain. Mostly 220s on those trips otherwise. Unloaded with just passengers, 205-210 in 90 plus degree...

What criteria do you use when selecting a motor oil?

Understood but you are talking about cars out of warranty. The biggest contention with the other poster was not that I advocated that he was wrong but that as a practical matter, if you are under warranty follow the book because the service writer behind the counter doesn’t care - if there are...

What criteria do you use when selecting a motor oil?

As to substance, every business, certainly any business of size, operates within a regulatory environment. It does not equate to the outcomes being insufficient, although certainly there are compromises made. The question is whether those compromises materially and adversely impact the advice...

There are no rants here but there is a history. I will leave it there.
