Walmart M1 5w-40 Euro pack of 3 for $24.47 Seems to be working again.

Ordered two 3-packs of 5W-40 for shipping, delivery on Sun. Let's see if I receive 6 jugs or only 2.

Walmart DeIcer washer fluid 1.50 /gallon

Good find. In Texas, Walmart doesn't seem to carry Peak Asian nor the SuperTech de-icer. :(

    Oil is Oil

    Yes. Just like "car is car" but clearly some cars outperform others. In programming terms, all instances of "Oil" belong to the same class, however, they have different properties. class Oil { constructor(baseoil, additives) { this.baseoil = baseoil; this.additives = additives; } }

    Tribologist discusses 0W8 motor oil

My primary concern is camshaft lubrication. PF's lubricity test is a close as it gets to simulating cam lobe on slipper pad action. I don't pay any attention to the cold oil race, etc. These photos of an intake camshaft and rocker arm from one of my cars. The result of using 5W-30 "energy...

1st prize for the most pathetic post here. No arguments, only personal insults. Instant ignore.

    Tribologist discusses 0W8 motor oil

PF's lubricity test setup is clearly far more rudimentary compared to the tech that LSJr has at his disposal and I do take the results with a grain of salt. That said, it does provide a set of data points that I view as valid. The results are consistent with more advanced lubricity tests. There...

    Tribologist discusses 0W8 motor oil

Thanks for the link. Interesting stuff, especially under References. So the rare, expensive, unobtanium additives are Ionic Liquids. If I understand correctly, these are basically salts in liquid state which supposedly have friction/wear reducing properties but their chemical stability is still...

    Tribologist discusses 0W8 motor oil

So according to the chart he shows, 0W-8 requires a large dose of super-rare, expensive, unobtanium additives to perform on par with an off-the-shelf 5W-30. I will watch the follow-up UOA reports with interest. He seems to be well aware that the only reason Toyota is pushing 0W-8 and long oil...

    Moly or Boron preference?

I prefer ZDDP around 1500 PPM. I pay no attention to B/Mo levels. Many lubricity tests show that high(er) levels of ZDDP lead to great reduction in wear. In this lubricity test, two Castrol oils of the same viscosity were tested for wear. The oils were identical in composition, only the levels...

Does Pennzoil have a racing/high ZDDP oil?

I asked thIs question in the Pennzoil Q&A thread and the answer directly from Pennzoil was NO. Also, the Pennzoil API oils tend to have the lowest amount of anti-wear additives like ZDDP of all the brands. Many VOA tests of PP 5W30 repeatedly show Zn levels around 540ppm, which is below the...

GR Corolla, 3cyl 1.6T AWD, manual, 300 hp

I don't think I will ever be able to get excited about a 3-cyl engine. Something about the lack of harmonics and general lack of willingness to rev high. I drove a number of 3-cyl cars mainly in Europe. They're all turds as far as I'm concerned. Minimum 4 cylinders is where I draw the line.

Do you short-shift your manual transmission vehicle?

Sometimes, in my two Vibes with the close ratio Toyota C60 transmissions. Depending on mood and traffic. I may skip 3 or 4 or 5 or any combination therof. When accelerating hard, I often shift 1-2-6, because 2nd gear gets me past 60 mph into ticket danger territory. Also, the Toyota C60 6-sp...

How old is too old for tires?

Loss of grip is very real, especially in the wet. I currently run 7-year old Continentals on one of my cars, no issues when dry but in the rain they're sketchy. My cars are mostly garaged. No visible dry rot, yet, and no bulging. I will run them until I see bulges or cracks. Reduced wet...
