thanks for the advice. CorvairGeek is aware. Saginaws were used up to early 80's I think. One more of GM's secrets I guess. What is in it? Just some old smelly sludge, but now that is gone and it's squeaky clean. It was thicker than rear diff oil, but thinner than chassis lube.

GM has a "special lubricant" factory filled in these old Saganaw Manual steering boxes, but no where do they tell what the spec is. Anyone know what to use. I've read chassis grease, but no buying that for a gear box.

Only real reason for 4x4 is the "low" gear when you need it. No better with traction and stopping.

I don't agree with this post at all. Very few alignment machines are calibrated and even fewer techs actually know how to use them. If your tires are evenly worn on all corners and the steering doesn't lead right or left and you haven't experienced any recent damage, you'll be better off...

FWIW, I'm a real old guy :-). Bought my first Michelins back in the early 70's when they were molded in France and Belgium. Never bought another brand except for one set of BFG TA's in the 70's which were exchanged at 10K because they wouldn't stay round. Replacements went out of round after...
