Diff oil to quiet diff whining

I think that is the main reason manufacturers started putting better sound systems in cars!

shredder oil. I know someone has seen this bottle around.

The sample bottle that came with my paper shredder looked like cooking oil. I refilled it with cooking oil. I think they discourage mineral oils due to possibility of spontaneous combustion like with oily rags.

Can battery die if not being used?

A battery maintainer is essential for long battery life. I had a U-1 battery last 12 years on a lawnmower by hooking up a BatteryMinder while not in use. Most U-1's are only expected to last one season.

Bistein shocks and mileage getting up there

Me too. I have 101,000 on a set and it is starting to feel like the tires are dribbling on certain washboard roads.

    Shotshells in a Henry .22

The Federal brand shotshells with the long brass casing can jam in some guns. The long case hits the ejector, but can't flip way because part of the casing is still in the barrel. CCI shotshells are encased in a plastic bulb which should prevent the shot from contacting the barrel, and the fired...

Batteries, Batteries, Batteries?? What is the BEST choice?

I'm fond of Odyssey batteries. I replaced the 10-year old Odyssey battery in my Trailblazer last fall because it tested at 200 cranking amps. I didn't want to go into cold winter weather with a battery that low. Still cranked fine though. Re-servicing the old battery to a UPS for its remaining life.

    Shade Tree Mechanics & Tools

Since you are doing your own repair work, buy the tools you need to do the job right. I have some tools i've only used once, but I still saved money and still have the tool for a potential future repair. Specialty wrenches and sockets are still cheaper than a dealer repair!

Truth or Myth: Modern Engines STILL Require Break-in

All new mechanical assemblies, be it an engine or a handgun, will have a break-in period where newly machined parts become acquainted and rub the high spots off of each other.

    Throttle body icing? Anyone?

Icing occurs at near freezing temperatures with high humidity. The drop in air pressure at the throttle body causes the air temp to drop below freezing and ice crystals/frost can start to form. I've had it happen on an older Holley carb vehicle. Once the engine begins to transfer some heat it...

Recommend me a sturdy grease gun for U-joint Zerk fittings

Get a pistol grip gun if you need to use a hose. Lever guns need two hands and work best with a hard pipe. Pistol grip can use a hose or pipe. As someone else stated, don't go too cheap. I have a couple of Plews guns that are over twenty years old. They leak a bit, but still do the job.

    Tire plugs, who uses them?

Best repair is a plug and a patch inside. Inside patch positively seals the leak. The plug seals the outside of the tire. If water gets forced into the belt area, it can rust the belts or cause tread separation.

What causes the rear differential to jump up and down rapidly going down the road?

Worn out rear universal joint causing the drive shaft to become unbalanced.
