I personally have witnessed near disastrous mishaps. My nephew bounced a basketball into a 3/4" pvc line and it exploded leaving shrapnel everywhere. The other was in the plant where i worked there was an area that had PVC air lines. A 2" line at 165psi let go and blew a 2 x 4...
When I go to the races I use a small pancake compressor for airing tires, blowing off parts etc.
For the heavy lifting I carry a tank of Co2 with a regulator. Works like a champ and a tank lasts me all season
I made one out of a glass peanut butter jar 35 years ago. Works great. Don't worry it won't implode even if you do pull a deep vacuum (which you never will). Great for the smaller jobs, brakes, power steering etc.
I never wore gloves...

Get a meter. Find out where you lose voltage. If you have full voltage to the motor then the motor or capacitors are bad. From the looks of the pictures the pressure switch is toast. Resistance causes heat which causes corrosion which causes resistance.....
