    Air filter service life

Good work, Jason. I'm cheating by coming into the thread late, but... would have said the old filter had 5-10% restriction from new. Used to play with water manometers for measuring intake ducting improvements. Not terribly precise, but it was surprising how well a "dirty looking" filter...

    BOBISTHEOILGUY FILTER TESTS

Michael, I'm also seeing interesting differences that make me suspect the varying specs for internal clearances. I've only tested two pumps so far (Melling Mopar 318 and Jeep 242) but while I'm not ready to name numbers I am confident there's significant loss from this factor, increasing at...

    BOBISTHEOILGUY FILTER TESTS

See? That's very different from the new Melling Mopar 318 gear pump I'm using. Flow appears to drop by >50% with net pressure somewhere near the 318 in my pickup at ~2Krpm engine speed. (though don't hold me to it until I can maintain temperatures with consistency) My point is that it's...

    BOBISTHEOILGUY FILTER TESTS

Richard, you're right, the numbers aren't yet matching reality as far as the pressures you'd see in an engine. Think of them as the other end of the spectrum from Jason's airflow data. We're still toying with heaters and instruments. Once a test rig can duplicate operating temps, pump RPM, and...

    BOBISTHEOILGUY FILTER TESTS

Even new positive displacement pumps have efficiency curves. Flow drops as backpressure increases. Add "acceptable" pump clearances and it's easier to understand why tests show flow isn't immune to restrictions. To me this is less about the safe zones and more about the low margin. i.e. cold...

    BOBISTHEOILGUY FILTER TESTS

Leo, pressure drop affects flow. Reaching bypass pressure differential earlier means there's more pressure drop across the filter and less flow at the same rpm. You're right, filtering efficiency is also important but that's another test. David

    CD2 Engine Detergent

The seals may care. My own take is that using solvent products in doses beyond what's indicated could lead to problems, even with otherwise compatible products. Without knowing the solvent chemistry and seal material it's a little like weighing witches to see if they're made of wood.

Trouble with Mobil 1 oil filter!

Any chance the gasket from the previous filter was still stuck on the mount? Doublng up gaskets guarantees leaks.

    Hydraulic plumbing question

Thanks Rick. Now I'm thinking the design is as it is to better isolate the bimetal portion from the threaded end and external temps. (Note the slender probe waist.) If I add oil it'll conduct external sources more efficiently (bad). It'd also add mass & could slow response as much as it helps...

    Hydraulic plumbing question

Acquired a discard aerospace hydraulic test mule. (My 1/2T pickup was very unhappy.) One part is a temp gauge and probe. The center piece is the high-pressure housing that threads into the plumbing. The right is the probe, and the left is the probe retainer. The probe has a small amount of...

How to stop drain plug drips / seepage

drifter, my remark was only to suggest that sometimes, when the drain plug seems to be leaking, in fact it's only the lowest point and the source is somewhere higher on the engine.

How to stop drain plug drips / seepage

Probably asking the obvious, but you're sure the plug is the source?

Why does ABS go crazy over sharp bumps?

Jason, my first experience with this behavior was in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. While stopping, with the right sequence of bumps, it would cycle the pump and the pedal would fall away. ABSolutely hated it. I later learned to release the brakes briefly which seemed to reset it. Not comforting when...

    Who makes Amsoil oil filters?

Yes, Baldwin makes Amsoil's oil filters. Some or all may be identical to Baldwin models. There's some uncertainty if the media is the same. Amsoil says not but that's our only source of information as yet.

Quality Control- and What goes on in a lab

It's corporate espionage! One of Al's spies! I've heard of these but thought they were just dark rumors. As the story goes, the small, 1st generation nano-rodentbots rebelled and escaped from their MIT creators. They now form a dark society of spies and assassins who carry out nefarious deeds...
