That is the filter. If I am correct, it is on a hose (C) connected to the fluid warmer. If you replace it, the new filter can only go into the holder one way so there is no possibility of installing it backwards. I, on the other hand, am retrofitting this filter into the return...

So the input line goes to what I am referring to as the "big end" as measured from the seam. The left end of photo 1 and the upper right of photo 2.
