Speaking of dealer sponsored oil changes, I'm so glad to get away from our Outback's frustrating free changes. The spec is 5.1 qts. The dealer would always put in 6 judging from the distance above the dipstick's full line. I pointed that out and they admitted that it was wrong. Since I started...
The 0W-20 oil flows thru the engine to where it needs to be much better than 5W-20. I trust the engineers on the oil weight recommendation. It's "flow flow flow..."!
I have a 1993 Ford Ranger 4x4 4.0L engine that runs like a top. The truck is rarely used. For instance, since July 2015 I have logged 1500 miles on it. Since it is driven so little, i have put regular oil changes "on the back burner" mentally and of course I've kept mental notes on our daily...

Reason for the question: A new 2014 Mustang 5.0 owner is concerned about an engine "tick" that seems to occur AFTER the first oil change. He had an analysis run on the oil that came with the engine and found an unusually high level of boron. Apparently the recommended MC 5w20 doesn't have this...

No. The ticking issue seems to go in many directions, i.e., what might work, mistakes made, lessons learned, changing oil too soon after car...

Thanks for the welcome! I don't have the tick in my 2014 Mustang 5.0, but there are those who get the tick after their 1st oil change. It happens after warm-up and from what I can tell it doesn't happen at rpm.
In reading all the posts on the Mustang forum, I have yet to see a definitive cause...
I realize that there is a lot of information about 5w20 vs. 5w30 on this website. From another forum where an engine "tick" seems to be a problem (2011-2014 Mustang 5.0 engines), the consensus seems to be that if an engine has a "tick" with 5w20, the solution might be to use a "thicker" oil such...
