Based upon the oil shower I saw I would assume that oil was leaking past the seal/gasket somehow OR it was leaking past the edge of the base of the filter where it meets the can. Sort of in this area....

That would make sense, but I would think that if that happened here I'd have known it. I mean, you can feel the rubber gasket as it's tightening against the filter base on the engine. So I don't think that's the case...but stranger things have happened. And also, like I said I put the two...

Because it's the parts on the inside that prevent oil from escaping to the outside? Is this a trick question? Maybe something inside wasn't welded/attached/sealed correctly? Again, hard to know without cutting it open but I'd rather just have my $15 bucks back.

To add additional: The plastic shrinkwrap WAS on the filter when I took it out of the box, so the likelihood that it was tampered with before I bought it is low. Also, in the photos you can see that I put the plastic back onto the filter because I’m returning it to the store for a refund...
