Filthy oil, noisy lifters - cleaning procedure?

Wow what a great conversation! The car is still sitting as I haven't had time to get a tag. I've driven about 10 miles since the MMO and Rotella6 - no change yet but wouldn't expect there to be. I did a much more comprehensive compression test and found I'm about 195 across the board which...

Filthy oil, noisy lifters - cleaning procedure?

Thanks for all the good replies, aside from a little variance almost everyone seems to agree. Final decision will be based on what's on the shelf at my corner auto store! (Not sure they have Rislone, but know they have MMO and Rotella).

Filthy oil, noisy lifters - cleaning procedure?

I've had good luck with B12 on various other small engines. However just know it'll destroy rubber in an instant. It's great on all metal, just keep it away from orings, etc.

Filthy oil, noisy lifters - cleaning procedure?

To save space I will be very concise - please don't mistake this for rudeness! Picked up a Chevy Tracker for my daughter, sweet deal. 130k, engine runs ok. PROBLEMS Excessive blow by, low power. Oil is dirty despite being changed < 2k miles ago. A clicking from under the valve cover...

    Doesn't smell like Merc V

Can you elaborate on "pump it out"? I'm not afraid to unhook the cooler lines, but like with a hand pump? Will that empty the torque converter?

    Doesn't smell like Merc V

Does anyone think a flush with known good fluid and maybe some LGR would help with the 1744 code? I've never fully understood that code and the solutions seems ambiguous too, such as "change the fluid" or "add some friction modifier" or "just drop it and put in a new solenoid". Am I wrong, or...

    Doesn't smell like Merc V

Just obtained a Mazda Tribute (Ford Escape) in great shape with a solid motor. Only tran history I can confirm from the VIN is it was "replaced" 40k ago. Inspection reveals the tell-tale markings it's not new rather most likely a rebuild. The shop that did the work has poor records, but says...

Ford "shudder" - unknown service history

I'm gun-shy about the dying because a few weeks ago I drove my windstar into the garage, pan drop and filter change, now it's KIA. Pump isn't pumping. o.o Still, guess I shoulda bought a lottery ticket on that day, because I agree there's no way the fluid change could've wrecked the pump...

Ford "shudder" - unknown service history

Just acquired an 05 Explorer, and it has what appears to be the torque converter shudder. Otherwise it runs and shifts just fine. 202k miles, and I do not know the service history. What's the best way to make the decision of whether or not to do a fluid service? Is there any way I can make...

    Fluid/Filter change ruined everything??

Final update - as suggested I did redo the job, and used a new filter from the dealer. Nothing got knocked loose or some other random mistake. All signs point to the pump. Pulled the lines to the cooler and gave it quick start, expecting fluid to spray everywhere ... not a drop. Therefore my...

    Fluid/Filter change ruined everything??

UPDATE: Dropped the pan again, everything looks fine. One thing is odd. Sucked on the filter, and there's of course a little resistance. However, sucked on the old filter and there's almost no resistance. Should there be any resistance in the filter? I know this is really a redneck...

    Fluid/Filter change ruined everything??

Thanks for great ideas. I'll clarify the shifter works, it's that they won't engage, which of course makes me suspect things like are mentioned here. Yes I dug out the old green seal. Yes I made sure the new filter was seated well, and it's quite tight. Grr, guess I'm getting dirty again...

    Fluid/Filter change ruined everything??

I've done the typical pan drop, new filter and fluid change at least a dozen times on Fords thru the years. This has never happened, and it's urgent. Drove into the garage, dropped the pan, cleaned the magnet and put on a new filter, replaced the pan, and topped up with about 5q of fluid. (Used...
