Yes it does - it fires the injector on the exhaust stroke

Here's the 4th UOA. I'm still chasing the source of the fuel dilution, but hey, at least the iron count is going down. I managed to time the OCI wrong and ended up doing 5,000km on this oil. This fill I've switched to Liqui Moly Top Tec 4100 5W40. Heavier viscosity oils that are LL04...

Yeah I wonder if you might be right about the testing error, seeing as the first UoA was for a Fuchs oil instead of Penrite. I can't find the datasheet for the Fuchs oil so I don't know if was meant to have a similar Phosphorous count, but it's also an API SP oil 🤷‍♂️ Thanks for the advice guys!

Yeah I ran some strong fuel system cleaner through it back in March; immediately after that the last bout of diesel contamination started happening. The injectors were tested and came back as not leaking and with reasonable atomisation. If the oil level starts to rise again I'll get a leakdown...

Here's the third UoA, with a change interval of 4,000km to match up to the previous UoA as much as possible. Iron is still high, plus PQI and Aluminium are both up, which is a bit of a concern. The oil filter had a couple of small flakes of metal in it but nothing worrying or abnormal. The...

    BMW 2017 335D - I'm Worried

Nice, that is a very useful visual representation. The sodium graph adds an interesting new dimension. I wonder if it would be worth getting a leakdown test and bore inspection done, and then possibly inspecting the turbo if both are ok. Hopefully turbo removal on a 35d doesn't require engine...

    BMW 2017 335D - I'm Worried

The other thing I would add is these engines don't seem to suffer rod bearing issues, it's the main bearings that seem to fail excessively. As far as I can tell from looking at failed N57 main bearings on the internetz, the failure states of the bearings typically seem to point to accelerated...

    BMW 2017 335D - I'm Worried

Hey, welcome to BITOG. Have a look at the thread I've got going for the N57 in my M50d. My engine also has high iron levels, but twX makes an excellent point in there: the low PQI count indicates the iron particulate is very fine, so more likely to be a result of corrosion than wear. I don't...

Nope, standard. But these things are pretty highly strung from the factory with 280kW & 740Nm on the spec sheet.

Great, thanks again for your advice. I'll continue to run shorter OCIs and post up the UoA analyses.

Here's the second UoA, 4,000km after the first. Aside from the diesel contamination, is there anything else to be wary of? I notice the iron count is still high and proportionally consistent for the OCI to the first UoA. Diesel contamination On the diesel contamination, I watched the oil level...

Yeah I don't have too much reliance on any temperature gauge fitted to a car from the factory, but this one seems particularly unrealistic! Short trips < 25km are in the minority for this car. The most common distance travelled is in the 25-50km range with a long distance trip (100-600km) every...

Thanks for your response, very informative. What sort of magnitude are you talking about for shorter OCIs? e.g. the 10-12,000km I'm doing now, or something closer to half that? The thermostat appears to be working properly as the oil* temperature gauge on the dash warms up quickly and is rock...

Haha, I have a rally car for racing and a GT-R for fast road driving. But I also have a strong sense of mechanical sympathy for all my vehicles. The X5 doesn't get driven hard, it's the wrong type of car for that sort of thing. The most stress it's put under will be when towing a combined...
