If a failing conrod or main bearing, camshaft wear, etc., is causing engine knock (understanding knock can be multi-causal and mis-diagnosed), will metals always be elevated in the UOA if it's been going on for a couple thousand miles/km?
If just a single UOA is used, vs trend-analysis, would...
Condenser, as has been suggested, or, you might already be familiar with this: lightly water mist the spark plug wires, dizzy cap, and wires to the ignition coil. Night test - let eyes adjust - tweak the throttle for a bit of extra load and thoroughly see what you see (I use a mirror, with some...
Thanks. This is in regards to a guaranteed/hot-tested 85K mi salvaged engine (91 Saab 900 4 cyl turbo).
One of the core/freeze plugs was rusted from the inside out - the plug has been tossed so I couldn't inspect (I don't think intentionally) - yet the shop proceeded with replacing seals (per...
Even with regular coolant changes, is it normalish for an older (+15 yrs) iron block to have some moderate rust & scale inside the cooling channels?
I thought it better to post here, vs Cooling System Fluids & Additives, as thought there'd be some head gasket replacement and/or engine...
I posted a query here and appreciated the good input.
With wheel bearings usually using NLGI #2, afaik, would the tiny roller bearings do better with NLGI #1.5, for pumpability's sake?
The originally spec'd Mobil GS57C is NLA: I haven't been able to get its specs.
There is no true Saab tech locally. The engine is consistently knocking - a deeper sound that increases as the engine temp warms up. Originally thought to be con-rod bearing, but disconnecting individual fuel injector harnesses does little to assauge the noise. Conversely, disconnecting FI #1...
sorry - only saw page 1 on last post.
low oil is speculation. the PCV valve was blown (so possibly main seal damage), altho top of engine had been recently degreased, there's more amounts of crudded on oil about and underneath than I ever seen on any other engine (in my limited experience)...
originally the alternator bushing where in really bad shape (amongst many other things!), and the alt was a rumbling, masking engine noise.
the saab has been taken to a mercedes/audi tech, for the knock noise, which to my understanding can be deceptive. tech (and me with a garden hose) thought...
One source says that this turbo uses bronze sleeves. I've read that 'copper is the principle metallurgical component of brass and bronze'.
Does that infer that elevated copper means that bronze is wearing?
still with this thread. might pull VC. turbo rebuild or new one is possible. would be great if the bottom end is largely intact - but doesn't seem clear right now. will likely also do another UOA. will post more as info comes available. thanks for the comments
hope that's the case! the TBN of 2.3 - not wholly depleted but seems to be at the low-end. don't understand Blackstone's comment - seems like the PO oil was run for a fair amount of miles? or do i have that backwards, like the saab engine ;-)?
