I believe the 15-40 is diesel rated oil, my friend has used it for 10K OCI's in his 6.0 for years and loves it. Don't know about the Long Rider designation????
Chris, what year is your Jeep? The SM is the better of the 2, but the SL is better for older engines.
When I purchased the SM, I used it in my Mom's 3.0 Ford van...newer, and my Fathers 440 Chrysler motorhome older got the SL.
I have used Non-Detergent oil with GM-Engine oil Supplement many times in the late 70's and 80's for the first 20 minutes of break-in of the engine and cam.
All my engines ran wonderfully. I refilled with a quality detergent oil...ran another 500 miles and drained and refilled.
