They're definitely not the same filter. I've used both, and they're both great. But you can see the differences just holding them. The Kohler Pro Extended Life is built in India and the Base plate is stamped differently. The Kohler pro has the same 8 inlet holes as the base OEM Kohler filter...

The viscosity is given a 30 or a 40 depending on the centistokes at 100 C. If an oil is between 10 and 12.4 centistokes, it's considered a 30. If the oil is between 12.5 and 16.3 centistokes, it's considered a 40. Hence, no SAE 35.

Yeah. Somebody somewhere decided that small engines like that which don't produce a ton of horsepower don't need an oil filter. I've seen a number of people say that myself. Your experience is showing you that's pure nonsense.

I appreciated the fact that they provide you with a cutaway and specs right on the Amazon page. Most of the time you never know WHAT'S inside. And finding efficiency ratings for most filters is impossible. The build quality and attention to detail in the Asian filters has been quite good...

Zinc-plated metal end caps... integrated bypass valve with a coil spring....zinc-plated base plate.. no sloppy gluing... Maybe I've seen better, but I know I've definitely seen worse.
