    Need oil for 1935 Plymouth

Thanks. It's tempting to buy the NOS parts but I don't know if that's really necessary.

    Need oil for 1935 Plymouth

Finally finished the oil change. I drained the oil filter housing which brought total oil usage to about 5.5 quarts. I also greased a bunch of points at the front end and 4 at the rear. I am not sure what to do with that leather wrap around the U-joints.

    Need oil for 1935 Plymouth

Yeah I just didn't feel like going to Walmart for oil, otherwise I probably would have chosen the 10W-30 HDEO.

    Need oil for 1935 Plymouth

Finally pulled the old filter out. It was a Wix (Carcraft brand) that cross references to a Napa FIL-1080, which I ordered. http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail.aspx?R=FIL1080_0192951607# Application list...

    Need oil for 1935 Plymouth

I have been adding MMO. On the last tank I added 20oz Techron and that actually seemed to make a difference in drivability. On the other hand, it made the gas gauge do funny things, so perhaps it is cleaning off the wiper. As far as the fuel filter, it just has a settling bowl near the fuel...

    Need oil for 1935 Plymouth

Thanks guys, I ended up buying some Rotella T 15W-40 because I couldn't find the 10W-30. Napa is getting me a filter (P-70 interchange) for it, as well. The car is really nice and I love driving it. Everyone gives me thumbs up, which is cool. I'll tell you a secret though: I am only 28 and have...

Yes it has a filter. I've never changed it, either. It may be reusable...

    Need oil for 1935 Plymouth

The 292 question was just a warm-up My next door neighbor has a 1935 Plymouth PJ Business Coupe and I have volunteered to be the car's mechanic. Her late husband left her the car over 5 years ago, after he restored it to resemble his first car as a young man. It is in great shape and...

Flat tappet wear, need a new oil

I may have been present when he first fired it up and I am pretty sure he followed some sort of first-run procedure. I don't know for sure but I think he would have also used assembly lube. I also distinctly remember him worrying about obtaining the proper lifter rotation so he was certainly...

Flat tappet wear, need a new oil

Well I guess this is the underlying question: is ZDP content (and I don't mean more is better) the biggest factor in determining an oil's ability to protect against lifter-to-cam wear? Is the average API SM oil (especially a conventional one) really inadequate? His cam wear suggests it is. Even...

Flat tappet wear, need a new oil

My father-in-law has an older Chevy truck with a Chevy 292 (inline 6) that he rebuilt about 4 years ago. He put a cam a little hotter than stock in it, and I think valve springs that may have been stiffer than necessary at the RPMs he was running. He's probably put about 6000 miles on it since...

    How about a 95 GM LT1?

Well my opti is ok. Back to the temp thing. Why is it running so much warmer now? The thermostat is very recent and cured a problem where it was runnign in the 220s. It went to 195 under almost any condition where the car is either moving or the primary fan is on. I saw 207 on the highway last...

    How about a 95 GM LT1?

Well everything's together. Aside from thinking I killed my opti (long, bad day...), things seem normal. Except now the coolant temps are running about 10° higher than before. Instead of 195 on the highway it's more like 205-207. I assume it has nothing to do with the Zerex. It better not be the...

    How about a 95 GM LT1?

I ended up buying the Zerex regular green stuff, which is what they recommend and seems to match what GM spec'd for this car in 95. I flushed very thoroughly. I wasn't able to get the knock sensors out so I couldn't drain the block. I don't really know how much water is in there now, so I'll...

    How about a 95 GM LT1?

Hmm, no votes for the regular green Zerex. Matt, I have gone through and tuned all of that typical stuff myself. The fan temps are down to normal now, and I've done a bunch of trans tuning, as well. I put a brand new stock stat in (was running at 220 on the highway before that), so 195 means...
