I wouldnt use a mini14 for anything beyond 100yards, period. Its a reliable enough rifle but after owning (2) of them, I would say they are only kinda accurate at short range and only as long as you dont heat it up.
If I just had to bet my life on a cheap "new" revolver it would be a Taurus 85.
If I had to bet my life on a cheap "used" revolver it would be a Smith Model 10 or 66 Police turn ins.
