Oil type & OCI advice for Air-Cooled car engine

Thanks. Would it be a big deal if I'd be changing the oil not annually but bi-yearly instead? Removing and cleaning centrifuge is a bit messy and there's a complex shaped gasket in between (which is supposed to be one time use but it's been re-sealed using RTV multiple times)

    Fuel tank sealer

Dave, I've also read you thread here on your Lincoln tank restoration. TBH, I was suprised the tank had pretty thick metal not to start leaking after that much rust you extracted from it plus the woodscrews abrasion. I don't really care about the curing time of the sealant. Since this is not my...

    Fuel tank sealer

I've bought a replacement tank which is in fair shape. It has sat dry for 20+ years in a garage, yes it has some rust inside but nowehere as any other of the tanks I had. That's why I want to preserve this tank as best as possible. Completely removing all the rust and crud is easier said than...

    Fuel tank sealer

I think I've read your posts here when I was searching for fuel tank sealer subject in this forum before creating this thread. You mean you had failures even using POR15 or Red-Kote products? New fuel tank for this car is not available. Used fuel tanks are all rusty, some more, some less...

    Fuel tank sealer

Hello community, I need some advice from people who has knowledge or experience dealing with fuel tank sealers. I've got an oldtimer car (I think that's called a 'classic car' in the US) and I'm having problems with fuel tank. Long story short, I am on 3rd fuel tank right now. All of them are...

    Valvoline Restore and Protect

There was a guy with nick "Drivbiwire" in the famous Canadian/US "tdiclub" forum who was actively advising people NOT to change the oil (unless the oil has ran many miles, providing his anecdotical evidence that old oil protects better) and rev their engines to redline (before shifting)...

    Valvoline Restore and Protect

I tried to place an order on eBay but later on it got cancelled and refund issued. I suspect the issue is either with high shipping costs or problems shipping oil to overseas. So yeah, I've tried eBay but that route didn't work

Oil type & OCI advice for Air-Cooled car engine

May I ask where the fact that air-cooled engines see higher oil temps come from? According to the gauge in the car, I'm seeing 85-95 Degrees Celsius oil temperature in the bottom of the sump, not higher than that. On my daily driver VW Golf TDI I'm also seeing oil temps 95-105 degrees Celsius...

Oil type & OCI advice for Air-Cooled car engine

Yes, I have seen that. Google for 'Motul Classic 20w50'. You should come up with black 2 liter metal can which says "Detergent level MID" at the bottom. On some pics I can see 'low' instead of 'mid'

Oil type & OCI advice for Air-Cooled car engine

I have zero hands-on experience with oil / dispersants / etc, just speculating. From what I understand, dispersants keep contaminants in suspension, or "in solution" like you said in previous post. However, if there is not enough dispersant power to capture all the contaminants, then some of...

Oil type & OCI advice for Air-Cooled car engine

What I heard from folks in local club that centrifuge is quite inefficient. Problem with it is that it spins at way too low RPM to be efficient. Other machinery (trucks and agriculture equipment) have centrifuge spinning at constant, high RPM all the time (4000-6000 RPM range, IIRC). Dispersants...

Oil type & OCI advice for Air-Cooled car engine

Thanks. Any hints on how to check oil's compatability "with centrifugal filter"? I don't have any clue on that :)

Which engine part will wear first from using too thin oil?

Assuming (but only assuming) the correct oil was used, it should have been either VW 505.01 5w30/5w-40 or VW 504.00/507.00 5w30 (by that time 0w30 was still not approved for 504/507 spec); as you probably know, VW 504/507 oil is "on the heavy side of 30", I think spec calls >11.8 cSt at 100 *C

Which engine part will wear first from using too thin oil?

I've dismantled several tens of (VW) diesel engines. Usually rod bearings are fine, worst case with a few spots of slight darker grey discoloration (but nothing serious), whereas main bearings are always pristine, just like new. One wouldn't say they were used at all. All of this is for engines...
