John, had a v6 camry like yours. I was suspect when looking at the cap. However, what you are looking at is a baffle plate. I took the valve cover off and the area was relatively clean. Just change oil often.
using Mobil1 5w-30 year round at 5k changes. May be a little overkill on the frequency. Just changed the oil the other day and used the extended use 5w-30, just a little more $$$ but so.....
I have a 95 jeep GC 4x4 with 153k on the 4.0 engine. I did the 2 bottle treatment as stated. The jeep was used when bought with 145k and the oil was serviced every 3k with 10-30 dino oil (so they say). The valve train was noisy. Before the test the gas mileage was 16 mpg at 70 mph during a 75...
I bought a 99 camry with the v-6 and 90k miles and then heard about the sludge problem. Took off the front valve cover and NOTHING (no sludge). It remains a mystery that some have problems and the oil service is generally the same.
Guys, I have owned a 92 camry (2.2), 99 camry v6, and a 04 camry (2.4). As to sludge dont worry about pre 1996 models, I opened my 99 cover and no sludge was there. As to oil I use in the 92 Castrol 5w-30, 99 camry Mobil1 5w-30, and in the 04 camry Mobil1 5w-30.....but the 92 has always run dino...
I have a lawn service and have used the ECHO srm-210 for year after year....and they are relatively cheap cost. It runs and runs. I am not crazy about the head design as to releasing the spool, winding and feed. But as to running it is good.
I had a 99 camry v6 and I also thought it was sludged by the look inside the oil filler. So, I took the valve cover off and SURPRISE, very little of anything. Mileage was 90k....so change the oil regular and drive them!
Mine is the 4.0. Appears to be taken care of with 3k oil changes with Castrol GTX 10w-30. Everything else I have is in the Nissan/Toyota stable....so I see in the long run.
Just bought a well used one with 144,000 miles. I have no experience with this line of product (always been in the small foreign car with Mobil1). From the previous owner they changed the dino oil every 3000 miles but gave no rec on the oil type/vis. What would be the best oil? I would guess...
