Read my post again. I am not questioning VW's weight recommendation, only that it should be viewed in the context of what was available at the time. By your logic, because there was no electronic ignition in the 60's or 70's would mean you should not put one in a 60's or 70's vehicle now.
There are so many mechanical factors that determine how and how long a tire will last I would think twice before assuming rapid wear is solely the fault of the tire
A quick comment on using 30wt because the manufacturer recommended it: it was recommended because the multi-grades did not exist then. Under normal circumstances a 10-40 will run like a 30 wt.
I have a '73 super B with a stock engine and electronic ignition. I used Valvoline VR-1 20-50 on a cross-country trip last year with excellent results. Total oil consumption for the 3200 miles was 1/2 quart. The VR-1 has a good ZDDP level.
