Sometimes it's actually cheaper (per quart) to buy a case of quarts (3 gal) than buy 1 gallon or 5 quart bottles. Forget about 5 gallon buckets, it's now way more expensive that way.

Ya, I have always been able to bring oil up when flood clear cranking. It just struck me as odd that I can't prime the system. The ones you have done did they have the gerotor oil pump on the crankshaft snoot?
