FWIW a Pureone has cured pronounced start up rattle in my '08 Xterra (VQ40DE). The previous filter was a K and N bought when Advance had their Castrol Syntec and filter for $30.
If the starter is the same design as the Nippon Denso in the mid 90's Accords then for about 20 bucks and a 1/2 hour of labour you can fix it. The solenoid contacts get burned up and mushroomed out. Pull the starter and replace these and the plunger and you should be good for another 100,000...
