    Older Kohler K17 using oil

I figured out the oil level issue. The ‘1.9’ in the manual is pints not quarts. So it’s only supposed to hold a little less than 1 quart.

    Older Kohler K17 using oil

I was wrong. It’s a horizontal shaft engine. I was thinking in terms of piston travel direction. It’s a V twin with the crankshaft running horizontal

    Older Kohler K17 using oil

I topped it off with Valvoline 20w50 today and it’s visibly much thicker than the 30 when pouring out of the bottle. We’ll see what happens after I run it.

    Older Kohler K17 using oil

I can assure you that my engine uses 10w30 MUCH faster than straight 30w. I don’t know enough about it to explain though.

    Older Kohler K17 using oil

A multigrade behaves like the lower number at lower temps and like the higher number once the temp rises. I speculate that the 10w30 usage that I experienced is happening before the engine reaches operating temperature. The SAE30 level doesn’t drop unless I run the mower for several hours. I...

    Older Kohler K17 using oil

It is an old engine but it doesn’t leak or smoke. It runs great. I’ll probably try some 40W but I think that I’ve proven that a multigrade burns faster then the 30.

    Older Kohler K17 using oil

I mentioned in the first post that it isn’t a screw in dipstick. It’s the style that was used on car engines for years. I also relayed that the Kohler 10w30 synthetic gets used much faster than the SAE30. The curious thing about the SAE30 is that the motor doesn’t burn any oil if I limit the run...

    Older Kohler K17 using oil

The cooling fins on the drivers side were mostly clean. I had to open the shroud on that side to peck on the starter bending one day and I pressure washed it while the shroud was open. The reason I asked about oil brand was that an AI told me that Kohler, Briggs and Stratton, etc small engine...

    Older Kohler K17 using oil

I’ve got an early 80’s mower with a vertical shaft K17 series 2 that is air cooled and has an oil pump/filter. The guy I bought it from gave me gave me two quarts of oil and a filter so I used it when I noticed it was using oil. The oil he gave me was Kohler 10W30 synthetic and it used about...

I want to run a thicker oil but…

AI has provided me with lots of useful answers and doesn’t waste my time by asking me why I’m asking. Do you know the part number I need?

I want to run a thicker oil but…

I’m now having doubts that this PCV tube is actually working correctly, but I’m also having a hard time finding the tube to buy. Does anybody here know the correct part number? all the AI chat bots are giving me the part number for the hose that connects this part to the to the valve cover

I want to run a thicker oil but…

The part in the picture is a “pcv fresh air tube”. It doesn’t have a traditional pcv valve. I went through the troubleshooting process and it seems to be functioning properly.

I want to run a thicker oil but…

I don’t inspect the PCV valve on a vehicle unless I suspect a problem. Every PCV valve I’ve ever messed with was a simple mechanical device with a weighted plug on the inside. When pressure develops in the crankcase the gas can push the weight and escape to the intake. The one in the picture is...
