When Did 5W/30 Become Mainstream in The US

The UK was very much 20W/50 based from the mid 1960's through to around late 70's and well into the early 1980's. When the high tech guys started using 10W/40. Apart from Ford in the UK a lot of the manufacturers were still using the same machinery to machine their engine blocks to sell cars...

When Did 5W/30 Become Mainstream in The US

I believe 5W/30 was used in the winter in the US for many years but was changed in the summer to something heavier say 10W/40 as it would shear after a while. At what time did the oil technology improve to allow it to be used year round. In the UK there was little use of 5W/30 prior to say...

Aunty Betty or Similar Study Name

I have never seen the study but it was mentioned on here a few days ago. They looked at the engine condition over say six years and advised some sort of extended change. If I remember it was written by say Exxon or one of the other majors and published by one of the societies like the SAE or...

    2017 mazda cx-5 first change

Has anyone any actual statistics to prove or disprove the reason for doing low mileage first flushes. For instance I have a 100,000 mile Mazda MX5 Miata and it's oil was changed every 9,000 miles according to the service record and is showing no signs of engine wear. As an engineer I'm looking...

Aunty Betty or Similar Study Name

Sorry for this question there was a study a good number of years ago by an oil company to look at how long engine oil would last if the person was only doing a small mileage every year. I think it was called Aunty Betty or something similar but a google search is not being productive. Can...

MX5 Miata Manual Transmission Diff Oil temperature

The owner’s manual specifies 75W/90 for the transmission and for the diff it specifies Mazda Long Life Hypoid Gear Oil SG1. The opinion on the net is the diff oil is either a 75W/90 or an 80W/90 In the UK we are getting a good number of 1990 to 1994 cars with failed diffs but the early cars...

    New Yokohama Ice Guard iG52c

I have had winter tyre on my Impreza's since 2002. 2002 to 2012 Toyo Snow Proxies that were great. I bought a three year old set of Yokohama Iceguards late 2013 and used them last winter in snowey Aberdeenshire. They were very good. I did not notice any difference in fuel consumption. eddie

Just bought an NB Miata! What oil?

The NB had solid tappets and did not suffer the start up chatter than some NA'a tend to. I have an NB and use 5W/30 all year round in the UK. eddie

    2014 mazda2 motor oil?

Riggas Mazda UK give Autodata their recommendation which is 5W/20. Mazda US will give a different recommendation as they do on the MX5. You cannot look at one countries number and then say that ties in with a different market, I know that just sounds daft. eddie

    Compare/contrast GL5 conventionals

If it's their car just butt out and let them spend their money on what they want. Nothing to be gained from putting in your opinion unless it is asked for and they usually do what the wanted to do anyway

Shell Ultra and Ultra diesel 5w40

Shrinking gap between 229.5 and 229.51 spec

I guess the 2009 graph may be wrong or the 2009 spec did not take into account the actual quality of the oils supplied by the blenders with respect to after treatment. eddie
