I like 5k intervals with full synthetic and a Fram Ultra filter. While I'm at it, I'll rotate my tires as well. We're already inconvenienced by taking the time out of our lives to maintain our cars, so why not take the extra time to complete the job IMHO.

I've installed tons of Purolator made Valvoline filters in my days in the quick lube business with no issue. It might be possible you have a burr or something scratching the gasket? That's the only thing I can think of that would cause a leak in that many filters IMHO.
