Supposedly bought Pennzoil HD-30, but it's API SN?

According to Shell PDS's (just search Pennzoil in US for complete listing), Pennzoil makes 3 different SAE 30 grades. Pennzoil HD 30 Pennzoil Long Life 30 (HDEO) Pennzoil SAE 30 Motor Oil You may be able to confirm which one of these that oil is by the different API specification listed or...

    Oil testing and results

There isn't really much out there as far as motor oil tests outside of the Amsoil ones. Kind of disappointing. There is this sportrider motorcycle oil test where they included a couple of auto oils.

I'm thinking 7% is an error too -- like maybe a 2 got transcribed to a 7 somewhere along the line. If it was really was 7%, the oil when drained should have had a pretty strong gasoline smell.

Consensus is that a little over full is OK?

Engines always have a built in safety margin of probably close to a liter or more. They have to. One has to expect that the sump will be overfilled a little at least sometimes. No way even 1/2 liter of extra oil should be able to cause any real problems. Over the years I have overfilled the...

    Help with Mazda Protege5

Quote: Lately my oil goes missing between changes (5k OCI). I say missing because I dont see any leaks, but I dont see any plume of smoke out the back either. Im now having to add probably two quarts between changes, minimum. My drive is 50 minutes each way, mostly highway. I have an idea about...

Why only 40 or 50 Grade?

Quote: I live in the Middle East and there are lube stops at most servos but the predominate grade is 40 or 50 only. What are your thoughts on why that might be? It's the base oils -- Group II/III vs Group I. A majority of the worlds base oil production is solvent refined Group I. This...

Help me choose oil in Australia

Delo 400 LE Synthetic 5W-40 should be available in Australia too. I would also consider using a Group II based 15W-40 like Delo 400 … Quote: Delo 400 15W-40 Delo’s product line formulated with ISOSYN® Technology combines highly refined base oils with advanced additives to create products...

Help me choose oil in Australia

I think Mobil 1 TDT 5W-40 is Mobil's best motor oil. This should be readily available in Australia. It would be on my short list for the best motor oil out there.

    Real Viscosity

Quote: So a HM 5w30 should give better MPG than a reg 10w30 EC oil. No way to tell. There isn't cross data references for those oils. From what I've read, fuel efficiency is closely related to HTHS, but there are other factors such as friction modifiers in play too. When Ford went to 5W-20...

    Real Viscosity

Slight correction. I believe there is only one reference oil for the fuel economy test, but the different grades have to beat that one reference oil by different amounts. It's been a while since I looked at he API/ILSAC spec;s http://www.inp.nsk.su/activity/preprints/files/2012_100.pdf 2.f...

Help me in my Oil Debate

I would lean towards a 40 weigh for a turbo engine run in a hot environment, or a A3 type 30 weight with a HTHS of 3.5 or greater. But almost all the 30 weight oils here in North America are energy saving so their typically < 3.5 HTHS. If you're going to go with a 40 weigh I don't see the need...
