Thanks for all the replies. I'll either buy a pump or drain a lot of the oil into a bottle, take sample, and refill. I'm afraid I'd get it dirty in a pan. But the Aeroquip drain plug makes it easy to get the oil into a bottle.

I'm about to do my first hopefully mid oil change interval OCI. Should I buy a pump and tubing and draw the sample oil out the dipstick tube? Or would it be OK to drain a little out the bottom? I have an Aeroquip quick connect valve, and I expect I should put a clean hose on it if I try that...
