Downsizing elantra to 16 inch wheels? Dealers giving mixed answers

I don't think anyone has mentioned that if you look up winter tires/wheels on Tire Rack, you can determine if smaller diameter wheels will fit and what is the appropriate tire size.

Continental LX25 vs Continental Cross LX Sport

The one thing not mentioned in this thread is that one of those tires is OE, which means it was designed to the vehicle manufacturer's specs. Usually that means better fuel economy, but worse tire wear, and sometimes worse traction.

    Tire Weight vs Rolling Resistance

Yes, new tires have a higher rolling resistance than worn tires, because of the increased amount of tread. I've estimated that the difference would be bout 5% on vehicle fuel usage. Yes, for 2 reasons: Increased mass of tread rubber and the tread rubber composition. Tires designed for any...

    Tire Weight vs Rolling Resistance

The way tire manufacturers use LRR is to indicate tires that have better rolling resistance than tires of comparable tread wear and traction. In other words, it's a relative term, not an absolute term. In theory, LRR as a label could be applied to AT tires, but the buyers of these types of...

    Tire Weight vs Rolling Resistance

Allow to answer barryh's question first: There are no statistics available on tire rolling resistance in the US. California is considering some, but that's at least a year and a half away. Within comparable All Terrain tires, like this, I don't think there will be enough difference in fuel...

2011 Highlander mystery vibration/shaking. At the end of my rope!

Thanks for the vote of confidence. You changed brakes and the problem started! That seems like the most likely source. Quality level of the rotors? But it doesn't make sense that it should come and go if it's brakes. U joints and CV joints sometimes do this! You changed tires and the...

    my original spare tire....

Inspecting the tire doesn't guarantee its fitness for use. Ya' see, cracks develop as a result of age AND flexion. So inspecting a tire that has sat for a very long is not going to yield evidence of its true state.

    my original spare tire....

First, my comments on the fact that a loaded 70 series tire appears smaller in diameter than the unloaded 65 series spare. There is no requirement that a tire match the published numbers. They can be both larger or smaller than the "nominal" dimensions. Tires deflect a lot, so it is no...

    New tires from Bridgestone

Perhaps I need to step in here and explain about treadwear. Most tire wear occurs when a vehicle corners. Driving straight ahead is practically free! That's because to move the mass of the car, there has to be a slip angle - the difference between the direction the tires are pointed and the...

    Tire Manufacturers and their sub-brands

Ok, it turned out to be easier than I thought. I've completed the page, but as usual, I am going to let it sit so I can review it to make sure I did it right!

    Tire Manufacturers and their sub-brands

Just an FYI: Every year, Tire Business, a bi-monthly publication that specializes in news of interest for the tire industry, publishes various issues that outline certain aspects of the industry. Among those is a listing of all known tire brands and who owns them. They organize it by brand...

    Tire sidewall small gash

The reason the cord is important is that there is a pressure gradient through the tire. Cord fabric tends to wick air pressure and if exposed, will give a higher pressure where it is not wanted, so it will blow off the sidewall.

    Tire sidewall small gash

I stand corrected. That is indeed cord, and the normal response to seeing cord is to replace the tire. I don't know why I didn't see it before. Thanks for pointing it out.

    Tire sidewall small gash

I don't see any cords. Doesn't look like it's actually deep enough to get cords I think you're good to go?
