overfill; percentile oil expands when hot; HELP~!

From what I've been told, a minor amount of overfilling isn't really a problem. But if too much extra oil is put into the engine, the suction by the oil pickup will begin to generate a whirlpool in the oil and allow air to be pulled in and circulated. Not a good thing. I believe that I read this...

Lube change intervals for differential oil...

Thanks, guys. Based upon what I've read here, I think that I'll stick to dino oil. After all, the Falcon has 133,000 and the Buick has 188000, both on conventional lube, and they're still going, so the stuff can't be too bad...!!!

    Power steering fluid?

I am under the impression that Power Steering Fluid is "Type A" automatic transmission fluid, and is basically hydraulic fluid. Dexron/Mercon fluid is a different product. I found this out when I was going to change the fluid in my Falcon's Fordomatic transmission and was told that Dexron would...

Lube change intervals for differential oil...

Guys, We have two vintage automobiles (1960s & 1970s) that we use as daily drivers. How often (time or mileage) should the rear axle lube be changed in these vehicles? Is Syntec 80W-90 a good oil to use is these cars?

    Lucas Transmission Additive...any good?

My wife's 73 Buick has a Turbo 350 automatic transmission. The tranny has about 120,000 miles on it. It recently began slipping a little in second gear...when downshifting going up a hill, it occasionally has problems shifting into second gear. One of the guys at Advance Auto Parts told me that...

    Lucas Oil Stabilizer...???

If the study was done on gear oil, how can anyone be sure that the motor oil additive will perform the same way...??? Seems like an apples to oranges comparison. Still, based upon some of the other comments, I'll probably steer clear of it and use STP in my high mileage 62 Falcon.

Oil Filters...the good, the bad, and the awful.

My wife's 73 Buick (188,000 miles) seems to have the "OIL" light stay on for over five seconds when it first starts in the morning. I think that I used a Fram filter on it during the last oil change. Does this filter lack a check valve to prevent oil from draining back through the pump when the...

    Lucas Oil Stabilizer...???

Guys, I've seen Lucas Oil Stabilizer at the local parts store. It seems to be very thick...maybe not quite as thick as STP. What advantage is there in using this additive, if any? Does it do anything more than thicken the oil so that an old engine will burn less and perhaps run quieter?

Oil Filters...the good, the bad, and the awful.

Guys, I've seen several statements made on this forum to the effect that Fram oil filters should not be used. What is wrong with them? What oil filters do you all recommend and why?

Why is Royal Purple so expensive?

Back in the 50s and 60s I used to purchase an oil named "Royal Triton". It was purple and had a strange smell...kind of like cooked cabbage. Was this oil the precursor of the modern Royal Purple?

    Anybody remember Wynn's "Charge"

We're all familiar with STP, but do any of you remember a product called Charge, made by Wynn's Oil Company? I was working in a gas station in the middle 60s when I came across this product. Its film strength was amazing! If you were to take a flat blade screwdriver and dip just the corner of...

How can an oil be rated at "0W"?

I got the following from an article on this forum. It seems to contradict some of the info above. Just wondering why... MULTI-VISCOSITY OILS Multi viscosity oils have polymers added to a light base (5W, 10W, 20W), which prevent the oil from thinning as much as it warms up. At cold temperatures...

    Viscosity range and synthetic oil

When I used 10W30 conventional oil and I pulled the dipstick on a hot day, the oil would be a thin consistency, but would not usually drip off the stick unless I held it at a steep angle and let the oil run down. With the Syntec 5W50, the oil would run down the stick and drip off, even when held...

How can an oil be rated at "0W"?

I've often wondered how a company can rate its oil as "0W". Per the usual definition of the oil's viscosity, the first number is derived from the amount of time, in seconds, that the oil takes to run through a controlled measuring device at a standard low temperature. Nothing can run through in...

    Viscosity range and synthetic oil

In reading the info on this site that describes the characteristics and processing of oil, it was mentioned that using a multi-viscosity oil with a viscosity range wider than necessary is not a good idea, due to the stress on the additives that are used to make the oil a multi-viscosity product...
