    Looking for Auto-Rx treatment advice...

Ok, so I'm now thinking I'll run a few more miles on the current fill, till about the end of next week, and then drop the current oil and filter, just to be sure there in nothing major still floating around in the engine from it having sat so long. I still have about 4 mann filters in the...

    Looking for Auto-Rx treatment advice...

I use semi-synthetics, usually Pentite, either 10 or 15, although now that Motul car oil is being brought in here, I'm thinking of switching to that, as I know the importers, they do a "Turbolight" 10W40 which looks about right for the Volvo.

    Looking for Auto-Rx treatment advice...

I have a 1988 Volvo 745 Turbo, just lost the previous engine at around 300000kms, most likely due to poor upkeep by the previous owner. As of just a few days ago, I sourced and had fitted a new/used engine, the claim from the supplier was that it had around 110000kms on it, no idea how true...

What oil temp is needed to remove moisture?

I tend to agree with the thought that it's really not about temp, and all about time, any engine will reach normal operating temperature quite quickly, and generally even if the oil "seems" cool, it is constantly moving over surfaces that are "very" hot, so that contact is surely bound to help...

Ultimate torture of engine and engine oil?

I always wondered how hard one of my motorbikes used to be on engine oil, I know it had "very" short change intervals recommended, which was not real surprising when you realise it was a 250CC 4 stroke that pulled up to 18000rpm with just general daily riding.

Is Amsoil an Over Rated Synthetic Oil

If you want facts or brutal truth on MLM, try... http://skepdic.com/mlm.html or http://www.vandruff.com/mlm.html I'm not so sure you can separate MLM from Amsoil when the subject of it's worth is brought up though, a product and it's sellers/creators is often defined by it's method of sales...

Confused by VW's recommendation for 1.8t

Well, probably not, but usage of certain grades of oil has always been a way to overcome known issues with certain engines, I know BMW, and Porsche to a lesser degree (and even a few motorcycle makers), have been doing that for years. So in other words, if VW are now saying a 5W40 is what you...

Does DINOs have any advantage over synthetics other than $$$?

All used oil must be sent for recycling here now, all tips/dumps here have a collection point, you can get in trouble now for improper disposal of engine oils. But to be honest I lost track of what happens to it once it is collected now, I really should see what the current re-use is here now...

Confused by VW's recommendation for 1.8t

So then I guess then your suggesting that heat does not effect oil viscosity, and that manufacturers oil recommendations should be ignored? Edit: Although, reading back, perhaps I should have said shear rather than thin, and just used overall increased engine stress as a factor rather than just...

Confused by VW's recommendation for 1.8t

I just did the math and realised that 60k miles is about 100000kms, so I'd certianly agree with that way of thinking, 80000-100000kms is heaps on a timing belt if you want to stay safe. With some cars that are hard on belts, I know people who change at 60000kms!

Confused by VW's recommendation for 1.8t

I think there is a minor cause for concern that VW are recommending a 5WXX oil, and your running a 10WXX oil, and they also mostly recommend a XW40 oil, and your running a XW30 oil, so basically your running an oil that is both to thick, and to thin. I'm not so sure "any" 10W30 will protect an...

Confused by VW's recommendation for 1.8t

Oil viscosities tend to thin down more in turbos due to the extra heat created, a thicker oil gives greater protection when the engine is run hard.

Confused by VW's recommendation for 1.8t

It's always interesting to see what car makers are recommending for their vehicles. Personally I'd go for the 5W-40 in a turbo, rather than any of the lighter 30 weight oils.

    Synthetic oil

Seal leaks are mostly an issue with older cars, where the seal material is not compatible with oils with certain detergents/chemicals, I doubt a car that new would have any problems though. It's kind of an over played issue anyway, most seal material has been highly chemical resistant now for...

Does DINOs have any advantage over synthetics other than $$$?

Maybe it's just me, but I really don't see the "time" excuse as valid for long change intervals, it's just not realistic. On a weekend it takes maybe 5-10mins to pull the sump plug, you let brain fade take over and watch some TV for 30mins while it drains, maybe have the usual 5 cups of coffee...
