It amazes me that we trust these companies to develop these vehicles and engines, then second-guess them in their lubricant choice for them, thinking they are incompetent Isn't that a somewhat illogical double-standard?
Hah, that's why they're specing 5w50 now for 5.0s equipped with...
Looking to change the oil in a few weeks on my 2012 Dodge Challenger R/T with the 5.7L Hemi. It is a 6-speed manual so it does NOT have MDS. Has about 5,000 miles on it, and one oil change at 3,500 miles with regular Pennzoil yellow bottle at dealership.
You can pretty much guess what's...
10w30 Valvoline would be perfectly awesome for that car/engine.
They didn't have to use tractor oil in it back then....heck, your 5,000 mile old oil today is probably better than new oil back then.
The 440 in my 'Cuda ran on 10w30 white bottle Valvoline from 1994-2005 with 0 issues...and...
I owned one of these for three years, took it to the strip twice a year. JLT-II cold air kit and a Bamachips tune one it. Ran 13.40s @ 105.xx with it. 3.31s and a 5-speed manual, 30mpg on highway trips with the cruise on. Fantastic car.
I used the following oil in it:
Motorcraft 5w20...
I'd get a tuner on it...will help the fan kick on sooner as well as score a few more hp. Maybe change to a colder thermostat while you're at it. Good luck with the Opti-Spark.
....why would you possibly use straight 30 in that thing. Unless you're pulling a disc or a bush hog, there is no reason to do that, ever.
Drain it, use regular 10w30 Valvoline, or the HM stuff to condition the 40+ year old seals. It'll be fine. Had the same thing happen with a rebuilt 440...
My 2007 Mustang GT always seemed to like Castrol Syntec 5w20 for some reason. But, the 4.6L 3v is not a 5.7 pushrod Hemi. Not that I think it really matters any. It isn't like M1 sucks or anything.

Replaced Valvoline Full-Synthetic Max Life (Silver Bottle) with 10w30 Max Life Blend (Red Bottle). I figure at this stage in the game...does it really matter?
