    BMW X1 / N20 2.0L Turbo - what oil ?

I am trying to u get stand an earlier posters comment about seeing cooler oil temps with RL. If I understand how the system works, the oil thermostat will regulate the oil temp. Regardless of some better oil brand thermal charecteristics, the engine oil temp will remain the same at normal...

    BMW X1 / N20 2.0L Turbo - what oil ?

I thought the water thermostat would regulate the water temp, and the oil thermostat would regulate the oil temp. On the N54 there is a thermostat in line with the oil cooler. I'm guessing the factory set point is ~220F since that's where it settles out at.

    BMW X1 / N20 2.0L Turbo - what oil ?

So if it has a thermostat, why would you see lower oil temps? Wouldn't the thermostat regulate the oil temp?

    BMW X1 / N20 2.0L Turbo - what oil ?

High oil temps. It runs over 200F. I have heard they will overheat with track use. I have a larger oil cooler, but due to the thermostat I still see those temps. My understanding is that the additional cooling capacity of the larger oil cooler, will allow it to maintain this range. I was trying...

    BMW X1 / N20 2.0L Turbo - what oil ?

My N54 BMW engine has a thermostat in line with the oil cooler. I read a long thread that advised against removing or modifying it, as the high oil temps reduced the fuel dilution in the oil. Maybe the N20 doesn't have a thermostat, but if it did wouldn't the engine oil temps be controlled by it?

Oil recommendation for 2012 VW Passat TDI

Gonna do my first change on the GFs TDI. So help me not mess this up. From what I have read I need a 507.00 spec. Looks like M1 ESP 5/30 will work, as well as Castrol Edge 5/30. I'm kinda partial to oil I can buy at Wal Mart. Any help appreciated.

    Recommendation for BMW manual gearboxes

Thanks to all the input. Next swap I am going to try a blend of ATF and RL MTL. It doesn't appear the ATFs have the proper additive chemistry for synchromesh gearboxes. Some of the however are a little too thick for smooth operation pain particular when cold. Blend seems the best of both worlds.

    Recommendation for BMW manual gearboxes

Thanks. Specifically which one? The 5w/30 or the 75/90?

    Recommendation for BMW manual gearboxes

Thanks. I found a long series of posts a few years ago for the 09 gearbox and it seems the conclusion was to stick with the original fluid, made by Pentosin. Don't even think the 09 box specs an ATF. The spec is like a light GL 4. I'm a little worried the ATF won't have the right additives. I...

    Recommendation for BMW manual gearboxes

Thanks. The 5 speed spec is Dex II. Maybe Dex III supercedes Dex II? From what I could read on the Mobil One ATF it is useable for Dex III applications.

    Recommendation for BMW manual gearboxes

I maintain (2) manual transmissions in my BMWs. A Getrag built 5 speed in a 94 325is and a ZF built 6 speed in an 09 135. I believe both call for an ATF. I have used various fluids in the 5 speed, Redline MTF, Redline D4ATF, and Mobile One Synthetic ATF. I currently have the Mobil One in both...

John Deer LA 105 Oil Recomendation

Its that time of year, when the mowing season is over and I change the oil in my equipment for the winter. I have a John Deer riding lawnmower, and a Toro push mower. I have been using Mobil One 5/30 in both with no issues, but I wonder if this is the correct oil. Thanks in advance for any...

VW Oil Conversation - why 40 weight?

Hi, I am new to the forum and read this discussion on VW oils with interest. I just bought a 2012 GTI. I get one more free oil change, and then I will be doing them. I use M1 in my other cars, as I have read it is good oil, and I can easily get it cheaply from Costco. Based on what I have read...
