    Are 'bad' filters really bad?

Is that picture of the one of the openings in the K&N? But doesn't the oil provide the additional layer of impediment?

    K&N vs others(paper)

Thom, do you have experience with the K&N air filter prewraps? I ordered one today. It is designed for dusty conditions and to waterproof the filter. I felt the extra protection made sense and certainly could not hurt. Essentially, it is like a second filter, before the K&N. Also, keeping water...

    Are 'bad' filters really bad?

I think that the theory that people overclean K&N's is almost certainly correct. And then I imagine they damage the filter media, overoil it, and probably keep it too clean so it never reaches it's final efficiency when dirty. Most people do not understand that a dirty filter filters better. I...

K&N demo display at murrays auto parts

Cryto, I was saying that if the K&N still flowed significantly better with the prewrap than a paper filter, maybe the prewrap would be worth considering. I contacted K&N. They do not make a prewrap for my car's filter, but they gave me a place that will make me one custom. I am seriously...

Can Not Using 5W-20 Ruin Your New Ford Engine

Okay, now Redline's 5W-20 looks very good in oil tests, that is impressive. How can it be better than Redline 5W-30? Is it just Redline or are other 5W-20's also showing SUPERIOR results to 5W-30? "Not too bad" is not good enough for me, I am looking for the best protection I can get for my...

SAE reports on air cleaner service life and engine wear

Yeah, I may take mine off as well. Really, I should do a oil analysis for Si, that would settle the matter once and for all. I mentioned that Mobil 1 told me the K&N is the best filter made BTW. I wish K&N would do more research, or if necessary, reduce the air flow a little and increase...

    Blackstone-Spotlight on Oil Brands

I also saw Blackstone say the oil and filter doesn't matter, neither does whether it is synthetic or conventional. They said they do believe that pre-oilers and bypass filters produce good results. I also think those statements are just salesmanship. Gee, can you tell they don't sell motor oil?

SAE reports on air cleaner service life and engine wear

I want to put a filterwrap around my K&N. I emailed them, I hope they make one for my filter. I am pretty sure the K&N is a fine filter. I am starting to think the problems come when people service them, i.e. overoiling, tearing up the filter, etc. I think I will run mine to 30-40 thousand...

Can Not Using 5W-20 Ruin Your New Ford Engine

Wouldn't 5@-30 Mobil full synthetic offer as good or at least similar fuel economy benefits as a 5W-20 blend? That is what Mobil 1 told me. Also, wouldn't a full synthetic 5W-30 like Mobi1 offer at least as much protection at start up as a 5W-20 blend? [ March 10, 2003, 04:47 PM: Message...

Can Not Using 5W-20 Ruin Your New Ford Engine

I called Mobil 1, and they said to run their 5W-30, even over their new 0W-20. That made me go with the the 5W-30.

What is the BEST air filter in terms of Protection

How? Donaldson told me only Corvettes. Are you adapting them?

Can Not Using 5W-20 Ruin Your New Ford Engine

A friend of mine recently bought a Mercury Marquis. Ford/Mercury has a one hour class of instruction for new Mercury owners. Anyway, at this class, they were told to be careful of quick change places that might not use the called for 5W-20 weight oil. They said using a different weight such as...

What is the BEST air filter in terms of Protection

I checked with Donaldson, they only make filters for Corvettes and a few others. They do not make them for Fords. I guess I will check with Baldwin...

Greaser, good point. However,if the K&N shows to be still better at air flow with the wrap on it, then I think that would be something to consider.

There is a filter wrap available for many K&N air filter designs that will keep water out. Yes, I am trying to get one! Sounds like it makes sense! I have read even small amounts of moisture in the oil greatly reduces engine life.
