Nokian Outpost APT All-Weather (Winter) Review

Glad the APTs worked out well for you! Sadly, here in Metro Vancouver, we're still waiting on our first snowfall! On a side note, how did you like Sun Peaks? Our family is heading there during spring break. We've been wanting to spend more time in the interior (and interior skihills). Never...

Help me choose: Nokian WRG4 vs Outpost APT

Hope the APTs continue to work well for you. Some more perspectives from me re the Outpost APT. So everyone in Canada knows about the crazy snowstorm that hit us in early-mid January here in Metro Vancouver. I was in Burnaby at the time and headed home in the late afternoon on the 17th. Snow...

    2023 Hyundai Kona N-Line 1.6T 5W-20 PUP 7,969 km OCI (18,229 km Odo)

Not sure I'm quite understanding what would lead you to believe 0W-20 (or 0W-30) is superior to 5W-20 (other than I switched from PUP to PP in my current run). Hyundai specs 0W-20 for my vehicle. My oil history so far is: -0W-20 PUP (non dexos 1 gen 3); -5W-20 PUP (non dexos 1 gen 3); -0W-20...

    2023 Hyundai Kona N-Line 1.6T 5W-20 PUP 7,969 km OCI (18,229 km Odo)

Funny thing is that PP "the lower tier" is carries the dexos 1 gen 3 label (which specifically addresses preignition and timing chain wear), the higher tier PUP OTOH does not carry the label (although probably passes nonetheless as noted above, but we'll never know for sure).

    2023 Hyundai Kona N-Line 1.6T 5W-20 PUP 7,969 km OCI (18,229 km Odo)

Thx. I know you've been very active on the Hyundai Kona forum so your experience matters. Not openly advocating for extended OCIs on the 1.6T smart stream; I'm likely to stay with 8,000 km now that I'm back to 0W-20 (last was 5W-20) and a "lower tier oil" in PP (compared to PUP allegedly) and...

    2023 Hyundai Kona N-Line 1.6T 5W-20 PUP 7,969 km OCI (18,229 km Odo)

At least PP has a Dexos 1 Gen 3 certification. So maybe I'll stick with PP and forget about PUP? PP (and PUP) are frequently on sale here in Canadian Tire stores.

    2023 Hyundai Kona N-Line 1.6T 5W-20 PUP 7,969 km OCI (18,229 km Odo)

Below is my 2nd report (PUP 5W-20). My first one is here (PUP 0W-20): https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/2023-hyundai-kona-n-line-1-6l-turbo-0w-20-pennzoil-ultra-platinum-8157-km-oci-10-260-km-odometer.370862/ As the smartstream is a DI engine, fuel dilution and timing chain wear are...

When do you install your winter tires?

My 2 criteria here in Metro Vancouver (BC): 1) Night time temps are consistently less than 0C; AND 2) There will be consistent snow. Otherwise my Michelin PSAS4s will stay on. My Nokian Outpost APTs simply don't have the same handling characteristics as the PSAS4s from even 0C to 5C.

    Michelin Pilot Sport AS4

I hear you. My use scenario is Metro Vancouver (British Columbia) which is very similar to the UK. Over here it's moderate and predictable enough that all-weathers is the most people need (and use). There are a lot of Nokian WRG4 and Michelin CC2 users in my area. Yes, the mountains can change...

    Michelin Pilot Sport AS4

As a sidenote, I thought this test was simply brilliant. Really goes to show how well performance all-seasons can perform at near 0C compared to even winter tires. I have a set of the PSAS4 and Nokian Outpost APT (road-biased all weather, off-road). In my use scenario I usually keep the...

Anyone still using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum?

Makes sense. After all, gasoline and base engine oils are all petroleum hydrocarbon mixtures.

Anyone still using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum?

While I've been using PP/PUP for well over 15 years, I'm always open to others. As I mentioned, on my Kona (1.6TGDI), fuel dilution has been cited as an issue (as with all DI motors). I haven't had any issues with fuel dilution based on one UOA after the 2022-2023 winter. Someone at the...

Anyone still using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum?

Perplexing how their lower tier "PP" has Dexos 1 Gen 3 approval. I suspect PUP is capable of it, but they haven't gotten around to the licensing thing yet.
