Redline vs Mobil 1, any real difference?

In the 1970's a friend of my father was a chemist for Shell. This is when I got started with my interest in motor oil as he educated me. The muscle cars at the time used 10W-40 and 20W-50 oils. I found they almost immediately thinned to a 10 or 20 grade oil in use. The use of "thinner" grade oil...

High oil temps in 2023 f150 powerboost should I move to 0w40?

Synthetic blends have a place in high end motor oils. There are advantages. I actually like the Motorcraft 5W-20 blend and have used it in high HP cars. Ali

Redline vs Mobil 1, any real difference?

I have driven Lamborghini and Ferrari cars for decades, been on the track and had friends who raced cars. Todays engine oils are far superior to those of the time when the Mondial was produced. You could run a grade or two thinner that will result in a cooler running engine. Cooler = less wear...

Substitute vegetable oil for engine oil - video fun

Renewable Lubricants Inc. are biobased vegetable motor oils that I have used in 600-800 HP cars. As far as I can tell, the best oils for performance and lowest wear rates. 'Currently running 0W-20 grade RLI in my 600 HP RR Cullinan. ali

High oil temps in 2023 f150 powerboost should I move to 0w40?

It would be interesting to put a 40 or 50 grade oil into your engine. I would guess the temperature will increase negating the "benefits" of a thicker grade oil. A friend of mine changed his Ferrari oil from a 40 to a 30 grade in his car that he races. The actual temperatures were reduced. This...

Trying to decide between HPL Premium Plus PCMO vs No VII PCMO?

There is evidence that an oil with VII actually have less wear than a similar oil without VII, despite fuel dilution. ali

Should oil brand matter so long as specs are met?

On a different take - - An oil brand may have no specifications other than API grade and may actually be the "best" oil for your car. For many decades I have used Bio-based Renewable Lubricants Inc. motor oils. And I probably ran a grade or two or three lower than as specified by the engine...

Flavors of the year from BITOG past..

I think the number one oil back then was GC 0W-30. 'Bet we all used it whenever we could find it. It came and went then came back to stores. It was never a staple on any shelves. Ali

HPL PCEO SAE 40, 8 miles, 2022 Honda Accord Touring (K20C4), 29.4k miles

I have gotten engine oils analyzed with as little as 15-25 miles on the new oil. What this has showed was that 10-20 percent of the oil gets left in the engine during an oil change. Ali

How long will you run an oil based on time, low miles on oil?

Hohn has the correct answer. This is my schedule as well. It's the moisture that does harm. "It also depends on storage conditions as much as usage, if not more. If the car sees a lot of thermal and humidity cycles and is stored outside, I’d change at least yearly. If its garaged or you live in...

Shell Helix Ultra and the hypocrisy of marketing

For some years now Ferrari dealerships have been using Pakelo products as coolant and motor oils. I have used the Shell Helix Ultra, both the 5W-40 and 10W-60 and prefer the Pakelo product. Ali Krypton XT SAE 5W-40 Fully synthetic lubricant for gasoline and Diesel engines, also supercharged...

Some Engines Are Shipped with Thinner Oils for the Initial Break In Period

I changed the oil in my 1974 Honda 750 4 at 100 miles and ran Castrol 20W-50 for 60,000 miles thereafter. That was in 10F weather in the winter and 110F in the summer. 'Used my boots to stop sometimes while driving on icy roads. I guess I wasn't the brightest bulb in the house at that time.

And those oils above thinned considerably with time and fuel dilution. The engines were not designed for "thin" oils yet they did not blow up... Ali
