Definitive Pennzoil Ultra Platinum vs Mobil 1 ESP vs Amsoil vs Valvoline Restore and Protect

True, I know it’s possible, but I presume / expect anyone who knows enough to care about using a high quality oil will also know that extended drain intervals are not very often a wise choice, even with a premium boutique oil.

Definitive Pennzoil Ultra Platinum vs Mobil 1 ESP vs Amsoil vs Valvoline Restore and Protect

I have not tried PUP but I very much would like to get some ESP 0W30. For cleaning though, nothing touches VRP as far as I know. Mobil’s new one is pretty good but VRP is the cleaning king. If engine is already clean I would say Mobil1 ESP 0W30 is the best reasonably priced option. If you...

New vehicle has 5 engine idle hours

Yeah I kinda go off the res for fluids because I do my oil at 500mi, diffs at 1,500mi, CVT or AT before 10k on any new car. It’s always in rough enough shape to justify the change, so I wish it was common practice for dealerships to do all drivetrain fluids by 5-10k miles, it would likely make a...

    Mobil 1 ESP 0W30, 3.1k mi; FA24DIT, 25' Subaru WRX 6.1k mi - used oil analysis

I heard about the louvre issues - any concerns on the synthetic endurance? I haven’t seen any complaints about them. And FWIW mine are cartridge for the Sienna and Spin on for the crosstrek. I’ll check the Crosstrek ones for louvre issues.

New vehicle has 5 engine idle hours

My FB20D in the Subaru Crosstrek had a similar process which I followed as closely as I could - especially because it has a CVT so the RPM range is less fluctuated during operation than with a traditional AT. I apparently did it right, as I have zero fuel dilution and zero oil consumption at 42k...

New vehicle has 5 engine idle hours

Yeah, also almost every break in procedure specifically indicates not allowing constant engine speed, there’s a heavy focus on varying RPM as much as possible during break in.

    Mobil 1 ESP 0W30, 3.1k mi; FA24DIT, 25' Subaru WRX 6.1k mi - used oil analysis

I had some TokyoRokis but the Fram Syn Endurance was too good a deal to pass up for a highly loved high mile capacity filler while still having excellent filtration.

New vehicle has 5 engine idle hours

Depending on the base oil and modifiers used yes - so it depends largely on brand and formulation not just the 5w20 label…

New vehicle has 5 engine idle hours

Can’t wait to hear this! Both being a 20 grade there is essentially no meaningful difference in operating temp protection, only cold start.

New vehicle has 5 engine idle hours

Can you explain why that would be good for break in? I’ve never heard that take before…

This is a good visual on the fact that short tripping is rough on engines.

Cam lobes look normal to me for the mileage, but I’m no pentastar expert. I’m curious also as @walterjay asked - why was it opened up?

Picture 4 shows the front timing chain and oil pump. - nothing abnormal here, camera angle just makes it appear wonky. The last two photos are showing the hydraulic timing chain tensioners - it’s normal to have buildup on them like this - the timing cover area collects a lot of varnish in many...

    Mobil 1 ESP 0W30, 3.1k mi; FA24DIT, 25' Subaru WRX 6.1k mi - used oil analysis

I know the Fram synthetic endurance I bought FE7317 are a lower bypass than the OEM filters - but do you think that’s an issue? From what I understand, Subaru sets the bypass really high, and at 15psi my FB20D even in winter with a 0W30 should not be in bypass… thoughts?

Not bad for a Pentastar with this mileage, but i would get on the Valvoline Restore and Protect for a few oil changes to clean things up before it gets much further along!
