Good point - I also thought it felt silly and bouncy with the rubber mallet - will use a proper hammer and update after my next attempt. Thanks, Trav

It's a Hitachi cordless drill and neither battery would recharge. No charging indicator on the in-wall charger. They have been sitting unused for a while. I have seen videos of people charging a dead battery with ANOTHER working battery but in my case BOTH are dead and won't recharge... Can I...

Well it's been only 900 miles but several months - I do have the correct oil in it now because I was able to change the oil out. And I really can't PROVE that they were the ones who did it although I know they did. I might take it to them (if i can't get it off) when it's time for regular OC...

Will try soon again. I think most of my fear is re: the housing itself. Perhaps I should wait until I have a spare filter cap.... Yeah I need to get some new wrenches of differing lengths - been thinking I need to do that anyway.
