Why isn’t there a group III base oil type lubricant for piston powered aviation engines?

Can you elaborate on what the additive issue was with Mobil AV-1? I might not understand your answer but I’m just curious. It seems a shame that oil for small airplanes evolved this way.

Why isn’t there a group III base oil type lubricant for piston powered aviation engines?

I don’t think there is a group iii, it’s really just Phillips and Aeroshell on the market. A Phillips rep stated a few years ago that they would never use a “synthetic”. I don’t think Aeroshell has changed their formulations much since the 90’s, and that was before group iii was very widely...

Why isn’t there a group III base oil type lubricant for piston powered aviation engines?

Piston aviation engines by and large still require leaded fuel. This allegedly poses a problem for certain synthetic oils, for instance, Mobil AV-1 which was, as was, as I understand it, a mostly PAO/group iv base oil formulation. Reputedly, the oil could not adequately suspend the lead salts...

HPL Recommendation... GM 2.0L LTG Turbo

I would just email Dave at HPL and ask him what he recommends for your vehicle/engine/driving conditions and or any specific concerns you have with the vehicle. For me he recommended the premium plus 0W-30 due to climate. They might not answer if too busy, but worth a shot.

    Post your latest oil change

Second change/third run with HPL Premium Plus PCEO, 5000 miles exactly. 6th change for this Bronco at 20,000 miles now. Samlple sent to Polaris. Sticking with the Fram Synthetic Endurance cartridge filter for now. Also did a triple transmission fluid drain & fill this interval.

Air India Flight AI171 (Boeing 787-8) Crash

How’re you guys getting to the conclusion of a malicious/hostile actor from “position of the fuel control switches”? Shutting down the wrong engine during an engine failure in a multi engine aircraft is all too common, and the fuel control switches are generally how the crew would do that...

5k fram filter looks like a hot mess

I’ve run Fram endurance cartridges for as long as 7000 mile intervals and even with no heat assisted -30F startups have never seen a filter looks like that, with 5W-30 or 0W-30 in the Ford 2.7. It has been awhile but I don’t remember the OEM Motorcraft from the first oil changes looking...

Air India Flight AI171 (Boeing 787-8) Crash

You can pull the thrust levers to idle by hand in most Boeings even with the autothrottle on. The autothrottle will fight you in certain modes, and try to advance, but it’s much weaker than a human arm and can easily be overridden even if you don’t turn it off. It doesn’t matter how slow or...

Air India Flight AI171 (Boeing 787-8) Crash

The PF where I work puts their hands on the thrust levers after the “gear up” call is made. We’ve had MD-11 autothrottles initiate uncommanded thrust reductions (to idle) at low altitude. After those incidents putting a hand on the thrust after gear up is called was mandated airline wide even...

    Mobilgrease 28 vs SHC-100

Thanks, I asked hoping you’d respond! I’ve actually had that problem with my shc-100 grease gun, it won’t flow into the zerks very well, for refill between cleaning/repacking intervals. Could be a dirty zerk too, and I’ve had some success hearing the zerks with a heat gun. But if SHC-100...

    Mobilgrease 28 vs SHC-100

Yeah it all has to be taken apart and cleaned annually, with parts washed in solvent and blown/wiped off so the mixing shouldn’t be an issue. Wanting to know what’s best to repack the tailwheel bearings with, specifically, given the disagreement in the manuals. The mechanics I’ve talked to...

    Mobilgrease 28 vs SHC-100

I have an experimental Super Cub type airplane that uses grease for main wheel & tailwheel bearings, stabilizer tubes/jackscrew, and tailwheel steering swivel bearing. The maintenance manual specifies Mobilgrease 28 for all of these parts. However, the tailwheel parts manufacturer specifies...

How to become a regional airline pilot ?

Well stated. Not to mention being held hostage in Chinese quarantine facilities whenever the geopolitical apple cart gets overturned ala 2020. The availability of “overtime”, which is usually needed to get into those 400k+ numbers for most legacy airline captains is highly cyclical as well...
