Help me decide what oil to use in new KTM

I would go with the Castrol 10w50 for the first service. Satisfies the warranty requirements and it's cheap enough that you can change it often. I'm a Rotella fan myself, but I am starting to understand why people make fun of us! You probably could use Rotella and not have any problems, but...

Post Your Latest (Motorcycle) Oil Change!

2014 Honda CB1100 OCI: 4000 miles Out Rotella T5 10w30, Fram PH6017A In Rotella T5 10w30, Supertech MP6607 The used oil still looked like it had some life in it. It had been in there for a year and 4000 miles. Definitely an improvement over Honda GN4 10w40 and a similar OCI. The new Fram...

    JASO Wet Clutch Additive?

I apologize for contributing to "hearsay". I thought I read somewhere about ester oil not being ideal for wet clutch applications, but I can't remember where I read that, and both Motul and Yamaha make an ester formulation specifically for motorcycles. Yamaha or Motul might be able to fib...

    JASO Wet Clutch Additive?

Add my voice to the drain ASAP and fill with an appropriate oil. I have no proof nor personal experience to back this up, but I have read that wet clutches don't like ester oils. At the very least, tell the new owner that it needs an oil change since it accidentally got filled with car oil.

    2022 BMW g310r; Rotella T5 or ?

I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the additive packs for Rotella T4, T5, and T6 are identical. It's the base oil that differentiates them. Currently, both T4 and T5 are considered semi-synthetic under the most recent, relaxed definitions of synthetic...

    Rotella T6 Alternatives?

Fair enough. But JASO keeps changing their specs too... The new T6 bottle with a lil' motorcycle pic on it (but no JASO MA/MA2 letters) is a tacit acknowledgement that Shell is confident recommending products for specific purposes, without the need of an outside self-appointed expert for...

    What's In Your Stash?

What kind and quantity of oil filters have you all accumulated? I am responsible for changing oil on 5 vehicles... Two cars and three bikes. Fortunately all 5 vehicles take the same form-factor, in this case it's the ubiquitous 6607 filter. So I've got a half dozen Bosch 3300 filters I got...

    Silicone vs. Nitrile ADBV

So what are the main benefits of silicone over nitrile rubber? I had thought it was because the silicone resists heat better, but does it also stay more pliable in extreme cold? Or does it simply stay pliable for longer, accounting for the extended intervals as shown in the previous video...

    Rotella T6 Alternatives?

That's what SHE SAID... Lol! 🥸🤣 (She's not fat, she's high in viscosity!) T4 is also considered a blend. The standards which constitute "full" vs "blend" seem to be a moving target, with definitions changing frequently as specs update... Its an exciting time to be an oil geek! Lol While...

    2010 VFR1200DCT - Rotella T4 15w40 ok?

Not all flavors of Rotella perform the same, and even the same flavor will usually perform differently in different bikes. I can't speak to race bikes because I don't own one, but I use a few different Rotella products because they work well for me, even compared to other, more expensive oil...

    2010 VFR1200DCT - Rotella T4 15w40 ok?

Rotella T5 synthetic blend 10w30 also claims to meet or exceed the JASO MA spec as of June 2023. They didn't change the formula, they just decided to start putting the JASO MA letters on the jug. I've got T5 10w30 in my 2014 CB1100, 2000 miles in and it's still running great. Pulls like a...

    Rotella T6 Alternatives?

That PDF is copyright 2019. The omission/deletion of the JASO MA reference for T6 just happened this year, 2023. They also added the JASO MA letters to the T5. I mentioned this in another thread here.

    Rotella T6 Alternatives?

Shell no longer claims that T6 meets JASO standards. Now they are saying that T5 meets JASO standards. And they put a pic of a motorcycle on the T6 jug. What are BRP specs?

    rear differential fluid recommendation...

Thanks for the clarification. I'm usually the first one to try something new if I see a potential benefit, but I don't see any upside to the gear oil. Even if the risk is very small, it's unnecessary.

    rear differential fluid recommendation...

The Navi has a CVT. Why would you use hypoid gear oil in a CVT? Use what it's spec'd for. You don't need to use Honda brand oil, but gear oil will screw up a CVT.

    Helmet sizing

I'm late to the party and maybe a little off topic... ALWAYS fasten the chin strap when size-testing different helmets. I made that mistake a couple years ago. I was trying on and comparing a dozen different helmets at my local shop, so I wasn't fastening the chin straps. It was just easier to...

Rotella t4 causing clutch to drag?

I think the takeaway here is that it wasn't working with a 15w40, and now it's not really working with a 10w40 either. It has little or nothing to do with the brands of the oils used... It's about viscosity. I suspect Rotella T6 5w40 would flow even smoother than the Valvoline 10w40, but it...
